Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck McCarthy.
Chuck, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born in Alabama and spent the first few years of my life in Gee’s Bend, Alabama, which has since become famous for its quilters. I went to the University of Georgia and graduated.
Eventually, I found my way to Hollywood, California. I have created many things in many mediums. I’m an artist, writer, actor, and entrepreneur. Pretty cliché? Sure, but clichés are clichés, because they are memorable, which is what I hope to be, memorable.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I have created tons of art in many different mediums. The common thread is entertainment. No matter the medium, I’m creating art that I find amusing, or I think my friends will find amusing on one level or another. I don’t know how art historians will describe me, or if they’ll describe me at all, but I think the simplest way to boil me down is as the middle of a Venn diagram of pop art, performance art, and Dadaism.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
For me, art is communication, and being an artist is and has always been about creating the world you want to live in and trying to get as many people you can to join you, even if only for a moment. Art is both an invitation to and realization of the artist’s world. That said, I don’t think the role of the artist has changed, but I think the audience has. There are more artists, there is more art, and there is more competition from non-artists fighting to sell something other than just a world they want you to live in. As far as real-world events go, the worse they get, the more they drive me to create more art.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I’m on Instagram @chuckhistory. It’s the best place to go to find my visual artwork.
