Check Out Cam Avery’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cam Avery.

Cam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a 21 years old singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, CA. I started making music when I was ten and learned to play the guitar when I was 8. I grew up listening to artists like Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Paramore, and Bob Marley. I started my first band at 13 with my two younger sisters and two of my friends. Since then, I’ve been pursuing the music dream.

When I was in high school, I was approached by a producer from Capitol Records. He saw my band performing at our talent show and said he wanted to make a record. I’ve recorded in professional studios since I was a teenager but when we stepped foot into Capitol it was like a dream come true. Throughout my teenage career, we performed all over Los Angeles. We played venues such as The Whiskey A GoGo, The Mint, The Viper Room, The Hotel Cafe, and even The Wiltern through a competition with Live Nation. We made a few music videos and signed with Create Music Group as management. I had many great experiences being the lead singer of a rock band, but I always wanted to be independent.

In the end of 2019, I started my solo artist career. I started the year off with a bang. I signed with new management, started recording with a new engineer, and have been producing all my own music. I’ve been working on an EP, and I now have two songs on all streaming platforms and a third single coming out in December of 2020. As a solo artist, I’ve been experimenting with many genres and sounds. My new music has a Funky-Pop Alternative vibe to it. My recent inspirations have been The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Jack Johnson, Rex Orange County, and Dominic Fike. I’m looking forward to being back on stage, to share my new music, and to connect with all of my fans again.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Growing up in the studio was a big challenge. Some nights I would be recording till 2 in the morning and then have to be at school the next day at 8. I truly started to care more about my music than my school work. Another challenge as a young musician was that I didn’t always see eye to eye with other musicians and producers and I’ve always had a strong passion for exactly how I want my music to sound. Recently the biggest challenge I would say is pretty relatable for everyone, Covid-19. 2020 was the start of my solo career, and because of Covid I was only able to perform at three venues. Just like everyone, I’m patiently waiting for venues to reopen and hoping we can move forward safely and have fun again entertaining.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work has always been centered around music. I hear a song and decrypt it entirely, whether that means the lyrics or melodies. I like to think of myself and my creative process as the conductor of an orchestra. In my music, I hear all of the parts and how they should be in my head. From the vocals to the guitar, to the bass, to the way the drumline should flow. My music always ends up exactly how I imagined it. I’ve been producing all my own music since I was 15. I started with Logic Pro when I first started producing but the past three years, I’ve been using Ableton as my main daw.

I’ve always thought my music was unique and different because of the style of my voice and purely my songwriting. In high school everyone called me ‘CamTheMusician’ because everyone knew how invested I was into my music career. I would ditch school every other day at 16 to go home and work on my music, or just anything that had to do with it. I centered a lot of time into Instagram and making fun videos of me climbing around buildings with my ukulele and then performing a cover to post later on. I was becoming famous in the teenage LA scene for being known as the rebel boy who did nothing but makes music. Although I never went viral on social media, I did make a ton of fans that still to this day have interest in what I do next to further my career. I’ve always been very creative in every avenue in my life.

What makes you happy?
Ever since I became a musician, I feel like I’ve known true happiness. Making music is like nothing else, it allows you to create something from nothing through vibration and sound. Vibrations make you feel, and sound allows you to acknowledge it. I can’t compare anything to me making a song in my room on my bed with my notebook next to me and a solid idea on my mind. Then the best part of it all is to share it with others. When other people reach out to me just to tell me that they like my music, it makes me feel special and unique and at peace. It’s not even the compliment that makes me happy, it’s the connection that I’ve made with the person. The fact that I had an impact on someone through the art that I’ve made makes me feel like I’m doing my part in this big crazy world we live in. Everyone has a passion for something and that’s what makes people so special. We evolve through inspiration.
