Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryce Oprandi.
Bryce, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Well, I got my start in tattooing 10 years ago in Arcadia, ca. I was at the crossroads in my collegiate career at the time. I had been getting tattoo quite heavily and grew a great interest in that the more I got tattooed. It turned into me asking too many questions, then to homework, then to getting a job as a shop help. I quit school to pursue tattooing. Did that for about a year, then the apprenticeship started. Maybe 6 months after that, I started tattooing melons, oranges, and willing friends! The rest has been a learning experience that lead me here.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I make tattoos for people. I paint tattoo flash and related imagery. I like to focus on styles that capture my surroundings. Things that I grew up around that have had influence on me. I try to take the normal traditional tattoo style and diversely change the appearance. Powerful women of color don’t seem to get as much attention in not just different parts of history, but also in tattoo history. I try to flip that on its head and bring a different light to classic tattoo imagery changing the characteristics of the normal native or caucasian look, to a more African appreciated approach. My inspirations come from life lived. The takeaway is to change the narrative through art. My art speaks for itself.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Assert yourself. That’s the best way to meet artists. Reach out and introduce yourself. Most artists seem to be introverted, so I feel like any form of networking helps bring artists together and positively gets them out of their comfort zone.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
