Check Out Anna Umana’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Umana.

Hi Anna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I went to Hunter College where I majored in Creative Writing and Studio Art. I have always been an avid lover of art from an early age. I self-taught myself Adobe Creative Suite programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. I learned these programs at first because I was/ still am into manga. For fun, I would work on comics with friends.

During my junior year in university, I discovered my passion for Graphic Design. It was while I went abroad to Australia for an exchange student program. Since then, I have made becoming a Graphic Designer my career goal of choice. What really made me pursue graphic design full time was when I lost my job during the start of the pandemic. I decided to start my own Graphic Design company called Anna U Designs. During the pandemic, I was using this time to expand my experience and knowledge. Currently, I’m pursuing an education in graphic design by attending F.I.T. online to complete a certified program in Graphic Design. When I am not designing, I write, and I am working on my first novel.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road for me. Because I am self-taught in graphic design. I feel there are things I still do not know which is why I am taking courses to grow as a designer. One difficulty about my current position is getting noticed in this digital age, there are a lot of people doing what I do, and I have to stand out. This job is a constant struggle of telling yourself you are good enough and not selling yourself short in front of potential clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Graphic/Web Designer and Writer. I not only have my own company, but I am also a freelance contract designer. I specialize in helping small businesses and startups. I think that’s what sets me apart from others. Because I am a small business, I know what it takes to get out there and as you grow, I grow. What I am most proud of is when I finish a project. That’s what’s most fulfilling when seeing your work done and the client satisfied.

On the writing side, I want the novels that I am working on to eventually become comics. Writing is another passion of mine.

How do you think about luck?
Well, I think losing my job in administration was the best thing that happened to me. It allowed me to follow a different path to learn and better my craft.
