Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Sung.
Angela, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always enjoyed art and wanted to do something with it, but money was an issue when I was growing up. That made me cautious about pursuing my career in art because I was worried about becoming a “starving artist”.
Thanks to the internet, I was able to do more research and view a lot of awesome art while talking to the humble and amazing artist. I remember even trying to reach out to Feng Zhu, who was super big back in the day (and still is), and he actually responded! I was so happy. He went through his experience in the art field and what I could do to make something I love to work out for me and my future!
That guided me out of my self-doubt phase and helped me gain confidence in my decision to just go for it. Research + passion + hard work always pays off! That’s how I started my career, and I have been trying harder than ever to get better!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
During the day, I work at Dreamworks TV as an Art Director. In the animation field, I do everything from environments to characters. I am extremely passionate about the current project I am on, and love it so, so much!
Working with the crew I have has made the love for the project even stronger. Everyone is so talented and we push each other to new limits. They give me the strength to keep going and make me more curious about how I can get better. After work, I like to experiment with different art mediums. My current obsession: GOUACHE! Painting in gouache has lead to many amazing discoveries, but I feel like the best thing that came out of my obsession was an art group that I started because of it.
In 2016, I started a paint group called “Warrior Painters”. We are a group of artist that go out during the weekends to paint a landscape, also known as Plein Air. Our community loves to set up gallery shows, meet new people, and just inspire everyone to get out and paint. Thanks to amazing management members like Michelle Lin (who is an amazing painter and has been painting with the group since the very beginning) and my wife, Kayleigh, the group has grown to be something much bigger.
We now have 1270+ members and have done over 100 paint session. Even though doing art is mostly for myself, I love collaborating with and inspiring people to do something new. I hope through my art, I can create a strong community and inspire young people to feel safe about their decision to do art, and make creating art feel less intimidating. Work hard and everything will pay off! I think Warrior Painter’s slogan says it best: No plein no gain!
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Art is super stressful, but never give up on yourself. Always try something new, and do not be afraid to reach out to others. 🙂
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can find me via Instagram or on Tumblr. I also have an online store located.
