Check out Alper Kasap’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alper Kasap.

Alper, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. A lover of photography and cinema I took an interest in short filmmaking courses eventually finding myself very comfortable behind the camera’s viewfinder. I undertook many projects as a DP and helped out in electrics shadowing DP’s and gaffers just absorbing whatever I could. I came to North Hollywood with the goal to just grind and hustle my way onto sets and help out in whatever way I can in an attempt to continually grow my own craft in the process. In 2018, I undertook the American Society of Cinematographers Masterclass held at the Hollywood clubhouse and after that, I was able to shadow some very talented DOP’s which has helped me enormously.

I’m continually endeavoring to learn, grow and attain a standard of visual imagery that not only serves the story but can touch, speak or evoke an emotional response. Currently, a member of the Australian Cinematographers Society ( ACS ) I have a body of work that consists of commercials, music videos and short films with my recent narrative work up for several awards within the cinematography community and higher profile film festivals. I’ve always said I don’t have an aim or a destination to get to I just work hard and enjoy the journey. Reaching a destination would mean the journey is over and I don’t want it to be! Its been a long hard working story so far and although I’ve enjoyed every bit of it lets just say the story is just starting…

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m a Director of Photography or Cinematographer. If I put my serious hat on I, provide technical and creative direction in the visual language of a motion picture. Personally, I love short form narrative work and I have been shooting a lot of short films and commercials. I wouldn’t like to say I create things, filmmaking is an intense collaborative process and its always a lot of working elements that come together (or sometimes don’t come together) to form a final piece.

This is the most enjoyable thing about the film making process, I’ve recently worked with some amazing directors who have gotten more out of me than i have from myself in years. It teaches you about your own capabilities, pushing your own boundaries, this is something that can only be done during that collaborative process I speak of.
People can usually take whatever they want, you find different people take different things due to the subjective nature of the craft. Personally, I would like to do justice to the director’s vision and the narrative I’m trying to serve.

How can artists connect with other artists?
Connecting with other artists is mandatory in this field. Who you connect with at the end of the day will contribute a lot to the type of work you do, the direction you go in and your own creative voice, but at the start when you’re trying to come up the ranks try to connect with anyone and everyone. There will be some people you hoped you never met and projects you wished you weren’t on but that’s all part of the process. Social media has made it easier these days, you have access to anyone you want, you get to see their work and can make a conscious decision to contact people and connect on any level. It all depends how bad you want it I guess.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My commercial work has been floating around the variety of media platforms and my short film work luckily has been selected and shown at some great film festivals. The last film I shot crossfire is being entered in Cannes and Sundance so fingers crossed.
