Today we’d like to introduce you to Thiruna Fernando.
Thiruna, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Being in love with design and art my whole life, I could make my American dream a reality when I was given the chance to move to Los Angeles from a little island of Sri Lanka. As I recall the proper introduction to graphic design was given to me at the age of 14 when my dad got me my very first computer and Adobe Photoshop software. He is the mere foundation of my whole design career. Designing isn’t just a hobby for me it’s therapeutic, I’d go as far as having the Adobe Photoshop tattooed on my arm. While I’ve not had any formal training I did take some extra classes on the basics. Most of what I have learned is through good ol’ internet and my own hits and failures.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I mainly create photo manipulations using Adobe Photoshop and illustrator. Inspirations for artworks almost always comes from my cultural backgrounds. From fantastical landscapes to whimsical fishing men, the majority of the sample stock pictures are from scenic Sri Lanka. Since my day job as a banker requires a lot of left-brained analytical skills, designing lets me unleash my creativity and imagination. That’s why it’s a really therapeutic and my chance to unwind. With my art, I oftentimes try to give the viewer that peace of mind you would get if you travel to a beautiful destination. For someone who cannot travel as often as they would like I hope I pull away some stress and tension by also adding inspire quotes on the caption. I like letting my artworks speak and tap the viewers mind rather than explaining.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
Comparing to what it was 10, 20 years ago, I would say it is much more easier for artists to thrive and to be appreciated. There might still be a little tug away from digital artists but since everything is becoming much more digital people will be able to embrace and welcome more and more digital artists. It would be a big encouragement if the city could feature new artists; exhibitions, live shows and competitions would be great ways.

The best place to see my artworks are over at my Instagram account. And also I showcase most of my works at Talenthouse. I love getting feedback and engagements on my art, boots my confidence and give me the chance to improve.
