Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatyana Guchi.
Tatyana, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m the firstborn to the strongest woman I know. My mother is a Japanese immigrant, and raised my younger brother and I, all on her own. Being the oldest, I had to learn a lot quickly. I’d go on to study biology at Hunter College in Manhattan, however once I’d finish, I knew this wasn’t my calling. My life wasn’t easy, but the most consistent and most powerful tool I’d possess was laughter. When I was 22, I’d meet a series of people who influenced me in such a way that I’d finally accept my first love, comedy.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a stand-up comedian, as such, my only goal is to bring smiles and laughter—the world is far too serious. As a biracial gay woman, I’ve seen injustice in so many places. I’ve never been represented in media, and I’m hoping to be that role model for someone else. I hope that from my comedy, people will see I was unapologetically myself—strange, ambitious, and bold.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I define success by growth. So long as you are better than the day before, you’re a success. Complacency is the antithesis of success.
I feel THE most important quality for any artist is resilience. The artist in this (current) society is very under-appreciated, under paid, and misunderstood. But we need artists to constantly evolve.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
At the moment, I’m a regular at the Comedy Store in Hollywood, Flappers Comedy in Burbank, and Eats and Giggles in Hollywood. I post all show dates on Twitter and Instagram @TrapyanaAli
