Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Wong.
Stephanie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up as an only child in Temple City, California. When I was young, both my parents had to go to work to support the family so often times I was alone with my grandma. As an only child, I didn’t have anyone my age to play with so I had to come up with my own entertainment which sparked my creative side. During this time, I would draw on giant rolls of paper that my uncle brought for me while learning to sew with my grandma. At an early age, I learned how to make toys with felt, fabric scraps, and buttons.
My parents saw how much I enjoyed drawing and creating so they signed me up for art classes. I went to multiple different studios until I reached high school. During high school, I took art every year as an elective and was often in the studio even during lunch just so I could finish my pieces. I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in art at a very young age and going to ArtCenter College of Design allowed me to take it seriously and pursue my dreams.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create pieces that are kitsch and reminiscent of my childhood. Often times we are burdened by the struggles of life and I think it’s helpful to escape the difficulties by being able to poke fun. I enjoy making artwork that makes me laugh because it makes life more bearable. I’m heavily inspired by tacky things and bright colors. The more obnoxious it is the funnier I think it is. I want my audience to be able to laugh at my work like I do.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
During the first year of college, I received a job to teach at a private studio. I taught while attending ArtCenter and on top of that I would occasionally receive commissions. Often times I had commissions I didn’t enjoy doing but I took it as a challenge to improve myself while making side cash. My advice is to keep hustling even if you don’t like it because you will reach a point where you are established enough to be able to do what you want.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
