Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Fabiani.
Robert, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My photography career is the result of my life long interest in the arts…It all began with writing poetry in the year 2000. I carried a pen and pad everywhere I went, and just wrote every day. Eventually, after some years later I wound up getting two of my poems published. Around 2004 I discovered oil painting. I was in a rehab in Pasadena and met a famous conceptual artist who worked with enamel, and sheet metal. He introduced me to the basics, how to prep canvasses, what brushes do what, pigments, etc… As with the writing, I would just sit and paint extensively for the next three to four years. I sold some paintings here and there, and then in the year 2008 I took a huge risk and started a street apparel company. Boy, that was a wild ride!! One that lasted two, and a half year.
It was at this time I discovered my love for photography. We had some issues hiring photographers, and in my frustration, I decided to just learn how to do it myself. So, I asked our main investor to just buy a camera and after reading the manual- my journey began! Eventually, around 2011 we dissolved the company. From there I went out on my own and started assisting professional photographers. I’ve worked red carpet events, weddings, editorial shoots, celebrity promotional shoots, shooting products, etc… Meanwhile, I had joined a theatre company in 2010, and it is here that my love for shooting portraits had originated. I love actors, just artists in general, and I love photographing them. There’s an intimacy that occurs between both the photographer, and the subject in the midst of shooting a portrait…That’s mainly why I do it, apart from the art aspect. And so, eventually after shooting portraits for a few years I began charging a nice competitive rate, and was able to open up my 1st studio In Glendale, CA. I’m happy to say that I have just recently opened a new studio here in the heart of Chinatown, where the art is flourishing. That’s my story! Thanks for taking the time to read, and please feel free to drop by the new 50,000 sq. ft studio anytime!!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I work primarily as a photographer, specializing in portraiture. But the art doesn’t stop there. I also write prose poetry, I paint with oils/ mixed media, and I’m an actor who works his craft daily. If I’m not doing any one of those things on a daily basis I start to feel like I’m not living out my purpose in life, and that’s not a good place to be. If anything, I would want people to know that my art work continues to grow, and that my inspiration comes in various forms: through other painters, actors, photographers, through nature, my children, my woman, etc… And if there’s a message at all, I would say “Go get into the arts, fail as much as you can, and just create something. Don’t be blinded or let money issues restrict you, just go for it. All that stuff will eventually fall into place”
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Honestly, I don’t think the role of an artist has changed much. You take in everything around you, the people, the world, etc. and you just make something from that. And hopefully, what you’ve created will make people think, or have some sort of emotional impact…
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
