Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrice Dworkin.
Patrice, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born in Boston, MA. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University, and an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. A career in advertising in New York City led to the full-time pursuit of art making. I’ve lived in California for three decades, currently living and working in Pacific Palisades, the on the westernmost edge of Los Angeles…
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a self-taught artist, working primarily in mixed media on paper. In my process, washes of tone or color are elevated by an intricate line drawing. Compositions that begin in two dimensions often rise to three, and translucency and layering are key.
Though frequently abstract, my “imaginary maps” take on the appearance of topography, reflecting a narrative quality that echoes my interest in storytelling, printmaking, and handmade books.
I’m strongly influenced by my environment and an acute sense of place, as well as my abiding curiosity about new methods and materials. The memory of a single statement by the artist Franklyn Liegel has endured for decades: “Sometimes you have to draw what you see with your eyes closed.”
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
As a studio artist, it’s essential to be comfortable working alone, and to understand that many ideas must be explored and developed in solitude. For me, success is tightly bound to the opportunity to pursue my ideas freely, every single day.
That said, it’s important to put your work in context, and the process is not complete until the work goes out into the world. Part of the hard work of being an artist is the willingness to seek every avenue to move your work out of the studio.
So it’s important to build relationships with other artists and the larger arts community, to find collaborators and peers whose opinions you trust, and dealers and collectors who are ready to receive your work.
