Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Metzger.
Natalie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I completely fell into filmmaking. At Emory University, I double majored in theater & dance and minored in English. Then in grad school at CalArts, I was directing/producing dance theater pieces, when I started getting frustrated with the audience limitations of the stage. Stage audiences are limited by geographic region and by the short timespan that the show is up. I wanted people across the world to be able to experience the work and for the work to live on and accessed at any time. So I started filming my pieces in interesting locations just for fun. I submitted those short films to festivals, and they started getting attention and awards, so I made more. I made the jump from there to music videos and commercials, and then my filmmaker friends started asking me to help them make their projects. Eventually I started getting paid to produce, and then continued on to start producing series and features.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I produce and direct film projects, both narrative and documentary.
My work has been described as “visually rich and thoughtful.”
Each project tends to have its own unique message.
In general, I tend to like stories about underdogs or individuals that are going up against the group.
Because of my dance background, I tend to put a lot of focus on non-verbal language, both the choreography of the camera and the body language of the actors.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
For me, it’s about creating a film family. I try to surround myself with amazing collaborators that constantly inspire me. It’s this team, this tribe, that makes me feel like a successful artist and one that is continuing to grow day by day and project by project.
