Today we’d like to introduce you to Miya Ando.
Miya, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born in Los Angeles but raised in the Santa Cruz mountains in Northern California as well as in Okayama, Japan. I’m half Japanese and half Russian-American. My grandfather in Japan was the head priest of a small Buddhist temple. Before my family was Buddhist priests, they were swordsmiths. I lived in Japan and trained as an apprentice to a master metalsmith when I completed the training, I moved to San Francisco and starting making paintings on steel utilizing various metal finishing and surface transformation techniques. I work with various materials in addition to metal now.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My work is a meditation on the idea that in Buddhism as well as in Quantum Physics, the fundamental nature of reality is that all constituent forms that make up the universe are temporary, a concept termed ‘Sunyata. I focus on investigating one’s relationship to time and temporality in my work.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I define success as having the freedom to make and do what one likes. Most essential to success is focus.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work is in the permanent collections of LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), The Detroit Institute of Arts Museum and other public institutions. Next year, I have solo exhibitions with Nils Kantor Gallery here in LA, also one in Singapore with Sundaram Tagore Gallery. I have a group exhibition with The Corning Museum of Glass and will be creating an interactive, public artwork a “Wishing Mandala” for The Asia Foundation. I’m doing something here in February in conjunction with Frieze Los Angeles fair. I also have works on view at LAX airport until May 19, 2019.
