Art & Life with Gloria Zhang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gloria Zhang.

Gloria, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was majoring in Decoration and Design in college. I started as an advertising design director in Hailin Fu’s tattoo studio. In 2002, we co-founded “Lie Huo Tang”, which means Hall of Flame in Chinese, in Shandong province in China. It is then I started my career as tattoo artist. I combined traditional techniques and tattoo panting and formed into my own style “Kyo”, delicate and beautiful like a women’s figure. I won the award for best national female tattoo artist in China. I moved to the states in 2013 and started “Hailin Tatoo Studio” in West Hollywood, CA. In 2016, I won three awards- Artist’s choice Best Unique Tattoo, Artist’s choice sleeve award and colored design sheet award in National Tattoo Association convention.

I infused modern tattoo art with my background of traditional painting. I’m fond of using thin line depiction in my art work; such as the petal of the flowers, the whiskers, the fur and the claws of the animals, the ornament of an object.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I have been drawing my entire life. Like most artists, I’m really sharp when it comes to aesthetics I infused modern tattoo art with my background of traditional painting. I’m fond of using thin line depiction in my art work; such as the petal of the flowers, the whiskers, the fur and the claws of the animals, the ornament of an object. Knowing my clients’ stories helps me a lot while designing a sketch. I enjoy the smile coming from my clients when my ink meets their satisfaction and beyond their expectation.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
In order to stand out in a multi-cultural society, as a Chinese artist, it is a challenge to introduce Chinese art in the states. Everyone has their existing knowledge of art and beauty.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can follow me on Gloria tattoo and Hailintattoo Instagram. I’m starting my Pinterest page called Gloria Tattoo, there are different sub-categories: black/grey; color; realistic. I also have a physical portfolio in Hailin Tattoo Studio in WeHo.
