Art & Life with Freeman McFadden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Freeman McFadden.

Freeman, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My story is epic. I come from a line of artists; some are creative in the way words are used, creating thoughts with pen and paper producing beautiful stories, others using their artistic skill of drawing creating a beautiful scene with different brush strokes, and another has a love of movement and dance. Not all of them pursued their passion, but they all shinned so brightly when they were doing these things.

With all the creative energy surrounding me, I had to discover what I was good at, and how I wanted to express myself creatively. My mother and father are the ones I have to give appreciation to for open-handedly providing me my first camera at the age of three. Unbeknown to my parents this instrument they introduced me to would become my first love of art community. Once a camera was in my hands; I went out exploring the world with it. I started with my neighborhood, shooting everything and anything I could within the 24 frames. Eventually, I began shooting family gathering and constantly cutting off everyone’s head in the picture frame. That persisted for a little while, but I grew to understand the camera, myself and how people tended to interact with someone with a camera. I enhanced my photography skills by attending Brooks Institute of Photography. I began my career in photography by working for various company as a freelance photographer in fashion.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a Photographer. My art is working with people; my canvas is the studio or location, and my brush is the use of lighting. It sounds somewhat dramatic, but it is all true. As a photographer, I enjoy expressing my thoughts, emotions, and desires in a snapshot of something unusual, beautiful and thought-provoking. I do this because most of the time words are not explicit or profound enough to express the vision of the images I see. I find that word can be limiting at times, but an image can be “worth a thousand words.” I use these frames and my concepts to express those limiting words and archetypes that we’ve grown accustomed to.

My inspiration comes from my childhood, adulthood, my friends, my experiences, my travel, my failures, and my achievements. I love the gift of photography; the motivation to create is harness from within my spirit. I want other people to see my work and be inspired, maybe confused, but most definitely curious about why, and how.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
There are many forms of success, but for me, success getting to work on my concept with like-minded people. Being able to visualize a concept, and make it into something tangible is one of the best feeling ever.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?

I tend to post my work on my website Freeman-McFadden.sqaurespace.com, Made_By_Free, or FreemanWonding. I am always looking to work with new people and push the envelope. I endeavor to project images that have my level of authenticity and originality. Explore not only my psyche but the human psyche in hopes to challenge those that view my work and my self-expression.
