Art & Life with Emily Binder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Binder.

Emily, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born and raised in a small town in Michigan, about an hour’s drive from Detroit. My mother is a painter and chef, and my father dabbles in both subjects as well so I was influenced by their creativity from a young age. My father and I moved to California when I was fifteen since Michigan didn’t have many opportunities, creatively and financially. I lived in Los Angeles then received a business and art degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz before moving to San Francisco. All throughout my life, I’ve been painting and recently have begun to experiment with collage and photography. Art has always been a pillar in my life, something that’s kept me grounded and given me something to identify with. I can’t imagine myself living without some sort of consistent artistic influence and routine. I currently am working as the Administrative Coordinator at the Los Angeles Art Association in West Hollywood, and you can see my work as well as updates about upcoming shows at www.emilybinderart.com or on Instagram @emilyfbinderart.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I mainly create my art as a therapeutic process for myself in order to process but recently have begun to find more meaning in my work and the act of sharing it with others. Specifically, I’m referring to my collages, which I started creating last year. I’ve been collecting bits of paper, tape, fabric, stickers, etc., every time I find something that is visually appealing in some way but would otherwise be discarded. I organize these materials and create a composition with them. In this way, I’m taking some of the world’s discarded items and creating an aesthetically pleasing design. It’s a commentary on how positivity is more important than circumstance. There’s always something beautiful to be found amongst what most people would consider “trash” in the same way that there’s always a glimmer of hope out there even when situations seem dark and difficult.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
Consistently growing and maintaining curiosity are the most important qualities to strive for as an artist. For an artist to be successful, success itself can’t be measured monetarily; it must be measured by the artist’s continuous ability to find and overcome challenges within their artistic creation.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
