Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciera Foster.
Ciera, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My story begins as an athlete. My foundation for myself as an artist and in life was established by my martial arts training with my father. My father is a seventh-degree black belt and Tang Soo Do master. Additionally, he is the former sparring partner of Chuck Norris. As an actress and as an individual I know this set the fire of determination within me as well as developing my infatuation with martial arts, superhero’s and all things action. – Following this foundation my work ethic was cemented as an eleven-year completive State Championship athlete, and semi pro basketball player.
After injury as an NCAA athlete I decided to return to modeling ( my first big job was Nike), and then acting which was my true passion. My first month in LA I left my modeling agency in Beverly Hills to attend two fight academies one for film fighting and stunts, the other for weapons training and additional stunt work. – Several years and acting classes later I’m able to utilize these skills especially in my current role as “Livewire” ( Valiant Ent. Valiant Comics) one of the first leading female superheroes of color. Now Sony Pictures is producing a full live action film featuring my character. The journey wasn’t easy by any means and it still continues. However, I’m proud that I did it through relentlessly training and pursuing my goals as well as never allowing “Hollywood” to dim or cast aside my love for superheroes and the acting.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I believe now there are more opportunities than ever for artists. Foremost you now (like I did initially) are able to create your own brand and projects online. Which done with commitment and passion breeds opportunities. With so many platforms and avenues for content these days there are plenty of auditions for everyone especially since we are all uniquely different. Life in the arts (across the board) has never been easy. However, that’s what comes with the territory, making it all worth it. Pushing you to break limits and be the best version of yourself and by far the best artist you can be. My advice to any artist would be to stay true to yourself in the right moment that is what will be what takes you to the next level. Lastly, take care of yourself. Mentally, physically and spiritually. By doing this you will have more to give. – Train, and work your ass off, then train again. With this mentality I have been able to succeed in prime-time television, feature films, modeling for recognized brands. I do all my own stunts and of course I play the hell out of comedies (I’ve been told I’m funny) drama, and every role especially action and superhero roles!! As a blackbelt and theatrically trained artist always striving to improve, I will undoubtedly be the first female of color action super star…ever.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I absolutely think the role of artists has changed. We are entertainers however storytellers in all aspects of the business have the opportunity to be innovative and hold a mirror to society. I personally feel such a responsibility is a privilege. How many people can say their daily job and life’s work is that of something so transcendent and influential??
Furthermore, as things continue to become chaotic in the world as artist, we are always drawn towards exploring the truth. I believe artists and filmmakers will forever be committed to this feat of exposing all aspects of society and the human psyche. What I love most about the impression I am able to impress upon people through my art is simply letting the audience know no matter what their experiences are or what’s happening in the world, they are not alone.
