Art & Life with Brittany Sherman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Sherman.

Brittany, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Drawn to beauty as an escape from a difficult home life, and inspired by the setting I was raised in, here in Orange County where the ocean was always an escape just a short walk away, I found my medium of flowers to be something I could get lost in.

Color, tangibility and how people react to flowers had me in awe. The power of great design created in such an instantly satisfying way and the gift of an impermanent beauty was something I needed more of. I wanted to be better at it. Floral design provided me the path I was looking for. At the age of 18, I saw a help wanted sign at a local boutique florist and I had to have the job.

Now at 31 years old and many flower shops later, I had decided I was ready to launch my business Crimson Floral Co.

Crimson has been an enormous leap, full of freedom and a guide of learning the last three years.

Floral + Event design has a long way to go in the public understanding as far as what it takes and in understanding the low margins of a floral design company as it requires massive output, labor and cost of goods.

Nobody in this business lacks passion because without it, you would not stick it out. With equal parts intense physical labor, budgeting, creative energy and basic business sense not to mention the skill gathered over years of time. It can be defeating all while being exciting and fulfilling. The most inspiring thing in my eyes are the people you meet and collaborate with along with the couples and their love stories that inspire the designs. I love listening to our couples and corporate clients to hear their stories and vision and allow this to inspire the outcome from full room transformation to small house gatherings.

My design process begins with inspiration from the client or couple and the relationship I build with them. For my styled shoots, I just like to go as weird as possible and do things that push the boundaries and comfortability or wedding industry “norms”.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Floral + Event Design is an opportunity to evoke a response whether its the feeling you get when you walk into a fully transformed room full of floral installations hanging from the ceiling with glittering candlelight everywhere you look, while you and your partner enjoy your favorite food and music or one single arrangement on your bedside of 3 beautiful stems of your favorite flower. In short, my medium of flowers is a powerful tool too make people feel something.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
The only advice I have is extremely cliche “never stop seeking knowledge” and do not let anyone put fear in your heart when it comes to your passion. Be cautious of who you listen to for advice and who you share with to maintain a sense of self during your process as an artist.

-The lessons I have learned in creating with flowers and designing events is to ask for help sooner than later, pay good people well to do good work, make sure they have all necessary supplies and tools and materials and leave them alone to do it.

-Log your processes and how you spend your hours each week and think critically about how you can better spend your time in a more effective way for proper growth of your skill, art and business.

-Never think you know everything.

-Listen to what people are really telling you, the actual words and gestures. (a shrug followed by “I like it” equals I don’t love it and its important for clients to LOVE it.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
