Today we’d like to introduce you to Camellia Wang
Camellia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From the moment I could hold a paintbrush, I began drawing and doodling. My grandmother was my first art teacher. I still vividly remember her holding my small hand while I held the brush, guiding it as it “walked” across the paper. She once had a deep passion for painting but missed the opportunity to pursue it professionally. Her hopes and dreams were passed on to me, and I’ve found my own passion in this path.
Later, I met two teachers who greatly influenced my life—a couple who ran an art studio from their home. They introduced me to various mediums and different fields of art. Painting became almost everything to me, shaping my inner world. In high school, my parents and I made a major decision—to leave China and study art in the United States. The freedom of exploration at university made me fall in love with illustration.
Currently, I am preparing for my senior thesis exhibition, with the key themes being “women,” “volcanoes,” and “the body.” Volcanoes, as powerful natural forces, embody life, death, rebirth, and transformation. At the same time, they serve as a symbol of menstruation, exploring women’s growth and their connection to society. I will continue to explore themes closely related to my personal identity, growth, and the society around me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
During my journey of exploring my style, I went through a period of confusion during my freshman and sophomore years. At the time, I didn’t have any clear preferences and often imitated others’ work, constantly changing my style. However, looking back, all that confusion and hesitation was worth it; they gradually shaped who I am today. I’m not afraid to try new things, and I love those moments of inspiration. I’m certain that at some point in the future, I will change my style again, and I may even see the world differently. But I will never stop creating, and I will always keep my passion alive.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work always vividly reflects my personal philosophy and inner world, characterized by vibrant lines and playful shapes. Also, my artistic endeavors extend beyond extensive digital painting to include various media such as animated GIFs, art books, and ceramics.
In recent years, I’ve been focusing on art markets and have achieved some success. I enjoy showcasing and selling my work in various forms at these markets. I hope to connect my illustrations more deeply with the community and the world through merchandise.
As I approach the real art market after graduating from college, I feel both nervous and excited. Looking ahead, I plan to become a semi-independent illustrator and continue my creative journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I truly consider myself a fortunate person—I’ve had the opportunity to pursue a career that I love, and it has given me purpose and direction, for which I am deeply grateful. Likewise, I’m very lucky to have met many teachers and friends along my journey of studying illustration. Their support and advice have shaped who I am today.
