Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Dang
Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It really started when I developed a passion for food, when I realized that there was so much to discover out there. With the urge to constantly try new things along with the introduction of Yelp, I started writing reviews on what I ate. I wrote on my experience at the restaurants that I would try and even compared how the same type of food can be prepared so differently from one place to another simply due to a chef’s interpretation of a certain item. After all my reviews, I started to see a trend where family, friends, and colleagues would ask me where to eat, my recommendations and even what to order! Talking about all of this with my husband while we were out drinking boba, he was like, “why don’t you start sharing this on social media since it’s basically what you’re doing already and you clearly love it.”
That’s when that light bulb moment hit me and I realized he was right (the rare occasion where he gets the win). I decided to make it happen. I downloaded Instagram and here we are today. Sharing my love for food and good food deals!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were definitely some challenges then and honestly still. Even at present I’m still constantly learning as technology is always advancing, ideas and trends are ever evolving … It’s a hobby that’s keeping me on my toes.
With Yelp, it was a straight forward review and the pictures were basically point and shoot. With instagram and knowing where I wanted to take it, I had to learn more about photography, videography, content creation and learning how to be more engaging with my followers. These are a few challenges to name in terms of the transition to social media.
My first real challenge when I started diving into this was trying to figure out how I can share my passion for trying new food establishments and taking my kids with me. It was especially challenging when they are so young and do not understand how to patiently wait for their mom to be done taking photos first before eating. I wanted my kids to have the opportunities to experience new cultures through food and grow their love for food.
As I am thinking back on what challenges that has stood out to me, I would have to say, during the pandemic I was not able to go out and create content with food I was trying out in the community. I had to learn how to still be active on social media and continue sharing my love for all good things food related. That’s when I started adding some product photography and sharing food that I made at home. Although there were many challenges, I did not want to give up on sharing my love for food because I strongly believe great food is a journey in itself as it can take you places.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love that Instagram has been a place I can share my creative side while allowing me to try new food establishments. Although I have not been able to grow like some other accounts or fully monetize from it, my joy has always been helping others. I work full-time in the mental health field and am proud to say that I have been working in this field for the last 13+ years. In my current position, I have to be very detail oriented, organized, and most importantly … a compassionate individual, which truly has helped me with my Instagram. Being in the helping profession has allowed me to connect with other foodies who share the same interest and similar challenges. Since I am not reliant on Instagram as a source of income, it has allowed me the freedom and flexibility to create food content for new food products or establishments and I absolutely love it when I hear from my followers that they went to try out what I have recommended! It’s a very gratifying feeling.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
The biggest risk I took was putting myself in front of the camera as I have always been camera shy. I felt like people would judge me for my looks or feel like I am taking away from the content itself. But then as mentioned above, I thought to myself, how can I engage with my followers more? Many of them have wondered what I looked like and have encouraged me to show myself and not fear what others think. So, I have to thank my followers who have supported and encouraged me to take this risk. It was a big commitment but the outcome was well worth the risk!
