Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Cumming
Hi Leah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Having spent much of my childhood in Paris and exploring flea markets with my father captured my interest in antiques and French design at a young age. This ultimately led me to study interior architecture at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Later on, I spent time traveling throughout Asia, which introduced me to design concepts such as wabi-sabi, which has had a large influence on my designs. I began my professional career working at design firms including Nickey Kehoe, Jenni Kayne, and Soho House, until I eventually founded Maison Madeleine in 2022.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve had the privilege of working for a number of interior design firms, each which had their own specific aesthetic. I loved working on these design projects and taking part in the process, but I kept envisioning designing and creating a collection of my own, with pieces that have an antique feel, but can also fit into a contemporary setting.
After founding Maison Madeleine, one of the main obstacles I’ve faced is how to scale the business while remaining intentional about the pieces we put out and staying true to our core values including using the highest quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
At Maison Madeleine, we aim to create a collection that exudes minimalism and intricacy, while maintaining an old-meets-new-world aesthetic. Emotional design and ethical practices are crucial to creating furniture that fits seamlessly into any space. This focus on craftsmanship and using high quality materials allow us to create pieces that last and can withstand the test of time.
