Today we’d like to introduce you to Tay Bhogadia
Hi Tay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story starts in the UK. After graduating with a degree in Business Management & Public Policy, I went to work for Nissan Motor Corporation (yes, the car company!). While I was there, I worked in their PR, Product Marketing, and Digital Marketing departments, which I’m super grateful for because it gave me experience in so many different areas within marketing. After working there for nearly three years, I decided my life needed to take a different path. I realized that I had no idea what I really wanted to do. Although I loved marketing, I needed to explore something different, so I did. I quit my job and started acting (I know, quite a curveball, but you never know if you’re good at something unless you try it!). I did a month-long acting class in London, where I met some incredible people. Honestly, this was the best time of my life. I then wanted to do an 8-week acting course in LA, which I did, and another curveball… I never ended up leaving. I’ve been here in LA for one year now, and even though I miss England, this experience has helped me grow both professionally and personally. I’ve now got a job here in marketing, started taking real estate classes to obtain my real estate license, and I still take acting classes. I also have a passion for singing and writing songs, I would love to start writing my own blog one day. What I’ve learned is that change will never happen unless you take that plunge. So what I’m saying is, quit that job, move to a new city. Do things that terrify you because the only thing holding you back is fear. If I hadn’t quit my job, I wouldn’t have ended up in LA. I also want to say that I couldn’t have done this all without my mum and dad. They have been my biggest support, especially when I wanted to quit my job.
I want to tell you a bit about my dad because his story has been such an inspiration to me, and I hope that it can be the same for you. My dad was a refugee from Uganda; he came to the UK in 1972 with his mother and three siblings. They had no money and only a few items. He studied hard and got into one of the top three universities in England. After getting his degree, he then qualified as a Chartered Accountant and went on to become a partner at a firm. After he gained enough capital, he started his property development career, which he has been doing for the last 25 years. My dad faced a lot of discrimination and racism when first coming to the UK at the age of 12 and throughout his career. I find that racism stems from fear and a lack of understanding and wanting to understand other people. So have an open mind and be curious; don’t be afraid to ask questions! My dad had obstacles when pursuing his dreams, and yes, he failed sometimes, but he didn’t let that deter him. I want to thank my dad for being my hero and my continued inspiration. Watching him and my mum has given me a strong work ethic and the belief that no dream is too big.
I hope our stories can show you that no matter where you come from or how low it gets, you can always achieve anything you put your mind to. The key is hard work, consistency, discipline, faith, and kindness to yourself and others around you, no matter their skin color, race, or religion. Good luck on your journey, and remember, “if anything is worth doing, then do it with all of your heart.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! I don’t think it ever is, for anyone. One struggle I’ve had in life is rejection, both with jobs and in acting. You just have to keep going and not let it stop you; see them as a bump in the road. My point is, struggles make you stronger. See them as an opportunity to learn and then move on; it doesn’t do you any good to dwell on them. As my friend eloquently puts it, “It’s character building,” and she’s not wrong.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently work in marketing as a Campaign Coordinator. I have extensive experience in various areas of marketing, which I believe provides me a unique perspective. I’m also on the path to obtaining my real estate license and hope to be self-employed one day.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
COVID taught me many things, one of which is that social interaction is one of the most important things, whether it be with friends, family, or someone who just smiles at you on the street. Another lesson is to never wait to do anything because you never know what’s around the corner. ‘Carpe diem,’ as they say!
