Exploring Life & Business with Maya Shulman, ESQ of Shulman Family Law Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Shulman, ESQ

Hi Maya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into family law and adoption began long before I ever set foot in a law school. Originally, I studied medicine at the Medical Academy in Latvia. I was deeply fascinated by the complexities of the human body and the challenges of healthcare. However, as I delved deeper into my studies, I realized that my true passion lay not just in healing the body but in helping people navigate the intricacies of their lives and relationships.

This realization led me to pivot my career path. I moved to the United States, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Brooklyn College. My interest in understanding human behavior and emotions only grew stronger. It was during this time that I began to see how profoundly legal issues could impact families, and I felt a calling to make a difference in this area.

After completing my psychology degree, I pursued a Juris Doctor at the University of West Los Angeles School of Law. My background in medicine and psychology provided a unique foundation for my legal education, allowing me to approach family law with a holistic perspective. I was particularly drawn to the areas of adoption, surrogacy, and IVF, where the legal, emotional, and ethical dimensions intersected.

In 1999, I founded Shulman Family Law Group. From the very beginning, my goal was to provide compassionate and personalized legal support to families. I wanted to create a practice where clients felt understood and supported, not just legally but emotionally as well. Over the years, we have helped countless families navigate the often daunting processes of adoption and family law.

One of the core philosophies at Shulman Family Law Group is advocating for out-of-court resolutions like mediation. I firmly believe that courts are no place for families to resolve their differences. Families should have control of their own futures, and mediation allows for that in a supportive and constructive environment.

What sets our practice apart is not just our expertise but our deep commitment to our clients. We understand that every family is unique, and we tailor our approach to meet their specific needs. I’m proud of the holistic, inclusive, and empathetic services we offer. Whether we’re helping a couple navigate the complexities of surrogacy or guiding someone through the adoption process, we strive to make a positive impact on their lives.

Looking back, I see a journey marked by a deep commitment to understanding and supporting families. Each step I’ve taken, from studying medicine and psychology to founding my own law firm, has been driven by a desire to help people find their way through challenging times. Today, as we continue to grow and evolve, that commitment remains at the heart of everything we do at Shulman Family Law Group.

I’m honored to be part of this profession and to help families every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running my firm has certainly not been a smooth road, but it’s been an incredibly rewarding journey.

One of the biggest challenges was balancing the emotional demands of family law with the need to run a successful business. Family law cases are inherently emotional and complex, and I was committed to providing compassionate and personalized support to my clients. At the same time, I had to navigate the practical aspects of managing a law firm—hiring staff, managing finances, and building a client base. It often felt like walking a tightrope, trying to give my best to both my clients and my business.

Despite these challenges, I’ve found strength and inspiration in my passion for helping families. Each struggle has taught me valuable lessons and has made me more resilient. I’ve learned to trust my instincts, to stand firm in my beliefs, and to keep pushing forward, no matter the obstacles.

We’ve been impressed with Shulman Family Law Group, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As someone deeply passionate about family law, I’m excited to share my thoughts on where I see the industry heading over the next 5-10 years. The landscape of family law is constantly evolving, and I believe we are on the cusp of some significant and positive changes.
One of the most exciting trends I anticipate is the increased use of technology to streamline legal processes. From virtual consultations to online document submissions, technology is making legal services more accessible and efficient. This is especially important in family law, where clients often need timely and convenient support. I envision a future where clients can easily navigate their legal journeys with the help of user-friendly digital tools and platforms.

Another significant shift I foresee is a greater emphasis on holistic and integrative approaches to family law. As a professional with a background in both medicine and law, I understand the importance of addressing not just the legal, but also the emotional and psychological aspects of family issues. In the coming years, I believe we will see more family law practices incorporating counseling, mediation, and other supportive services to help families manage the emotional toll of legal disputes.

At Shulman Family Law Group, we already advocate for “out-of-court” resolutions like mediation because we believe that courts are no place for families. Families should have control of their own futures, and mediation is a powerful tool that supports this. Mediation and collaborative law are gaining traction as effective alternatives to traditional litigation. These methods prioritize the well-being of all family members and aim to achieve amicable resolutions without the hostility often associated with courtroom battles. I believe this trend will continue to grow, fostering healthier outcomes for families.

Additionally, there is a growing recognition of diverse family structures and the need for inclusive legal support. The definition of family is expanding, and I anticipate that family law will continue to adapt to better serve LGBTQ+ families, single parents, and families formed through adoption and assisted reproduction technologies. This inclusivity will be reflected in more progressive laws and a broader range of services tailored to meet the unique needs of all families.

One of the most profound changes I hope to see is a shift towards more collaborative and non-adversarial approaches to resolving family disputes.

Lastly, I foresee a stronger focus on preventive legal services. Educating clients about their rights and responsibilities before issues arise can prevent conflicts and reduce the need for litigation. Providing proactive legal guidance can empower individuals to make informed decisions, ultimately leading to more stable and harmonious family relationships.

The future of family law is bright and filled with opportunities for innovation and growth. We are committed to staying at the forefront of these changes, continually evolving to provide the best possible support for our clients. We look forward to embracing these trends and helping to shape a more compassionate, inclusive, and efficient family law landscape.
