Today we’d like to introduce you to Hyun Jeong.
Hi Hyun, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was a kid, books have been my passion and a great source of inspiration for me. As I grew up, I found myself drawn to creative activities like writing, drawing, and painting, not just reading books. So, when I turned 21, I took a bold step and enrolled in art school. This decision initially worried my family about my future, but it turned out to be a transformative experience. Art school was a busy and exciting time where I explored different disciplines to find my true artistic direction.
Graduating from ArtCenter marked a pivotal achievement that solidified my path in the creative industry. Today, I find fulfillment in balancing dual roles—I contribute my skills both in-house and as a freelancer across editorial, branding, and packaging design. This dynamic allows me to immerse myself in a wide range of projects, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities for creative expression.
Though my journey has had its challenges, each obstacle has helped me grow as a creative professional. I am driven by a passion to continuously learn and improve in my field. Looking ahead, I am eager to expand my skills and contribute meaningfully to the creative industry.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course, my journey hasn’t been smooth. I was the first in my family to pursue a creative career. When I was accepted into ArtCenter, I worried I might be the worst student there. Each term was very challenging. However, I saw myself improving little by little. By the time I graduated, I had become a skilled and confident designer with a unique style that made me stand out. I know my strengths and have refined my abilities through dedicated practice and learning. This growth gave me confidence in my abilities.
I’ve learned that no design project is ever easy. Each one has its own challenges, pushing me to think creatively and solve problems. I embrace these challenges because they help me create my best work. Every design I produce reflects my dedication and hard work.
My journey has taught me that growth comes from overcoming obstacles. These experiences have made me a resilient and innovative designer. I am committed to evolving and striving for excellence in every project. This mindset allows me to create designs that are not only beautiful but also meaningful and impactful.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
To be honest, I have always had an interest in various fields, including editorials, packaging design, children’s books, and branding. However, one thing connects all my interests: stories. I am constantly inspired by all kinds of stories, and I create illustrations and designs based on that inspiration.
Among all my interests, articles and newspapers are the most accessible sources of inspiration. Whenever I read an article, I visualize ways to engage people worldwide with its theme. This process fuels my creativity and drives me to explore new ideas.
Lately, I’ve fallen in love with branding. When working on branding projects, I always start by listening to the client’s story. I love incorporating their narratives into their brand. My deep understanding and genuine interest in their stories enable me to create a brand that truly reflects what the client wants.
My approach and passion lie in storytelling through design. Whether it’s creating an engaging editorial illustration, designing captivating packaging, or developing a brand that resonates with its audience, I am committed to bringing stories to life. I believe this ability to weave stories into my work is what sets me apart and allows me to create meaningful and effective brands.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I learned a lot from the instructors at ArtCenter College of Design, and each one influenced my design in different ways. One instructor who really stood out was Eric Nyquist, who taught Illustration Strategies. He gave me a strong foundation as a freelance designer and helped me become the confident designer I wanted to be. This was especially invaluable since I was just starting my freelance journey. Eric taught me how to negotiate effectively and pushed me to improve my skills and creativity. He also showed me that being a designer is about more than just loving to draw—it’s about solving problems creatively. Thanks to his class, I grew into a well-rounded designer.
I also owe a lot to my friends and family. I wouldn’t be where I am without them. My friends always gave me honest and helpful feedback on my work, and my family always believed in me. They gave me the confidence to keep going.
Without the support from my instructors and loved ones, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Their guidance and encouragement have been crucial to my growth and success as a designer.
