Conversations with Tamia Douglas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamia Douglas.

Tamia Douglas

Hi Tamia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was recently getting out of a toxic relationship and decided, “Now is the time to do something for me.” I’ve always lived dance and have been dancing since 3 & I remembered my mom going to a pole studio when I was 16 for a fundraiser & I went to sign up for a class there. A year later, I started teaching and have not stopped since!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a rollercoaster. I feel like dance brings up emotions in you that you didn’t know you had. It’s physically and sometimes mentally taxing, but it remains the only thing that keeps me sane. (How ironic). If I had to pinpoint one thing, it would be learning to stand firm in your beliefs. The world always wants to label things they can’t understand so that it’s easy to digest. This is just one of those things you can’t understand unless you immerse yourself in it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a movement artist, goddess of all things, a hood classic if you will. My specialty is combining fluidity and strength. Making power moves look simple and graceful. I’m most proud of my students, every day I meet new people and watch them grow as dancers, artists etc. to be part of their learning journey. I think my teaching is what sets me apart; I approach each student with patience and encouragement when they need it most.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think taking risks is the fun part of life. We don’t even know what happens until it happens, so why not be the writer of your own story? The biggest risk I’ve taken is moving to a city with no family, friends, or community, just vibes. I had to grow my foundation again from the ground up and have met some beautiful people along the way and have even gotten opportunity to grow as a person and learn more about myself and my values.
