Meet Eunmi Han

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eunmi Han.

Eunmi Han

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey as a jewelry designer began with my parents, of course. My father was a graphic designer and businessman, while my mother was a businesswoman. Especially my mom used to purchase earrings for herself, and I was her companion on her jewelry-shopping trips. I really loved and admired the sparkle of the gems.

Professional education started at Korea Seoul National University of Technology, where I pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts in metalworking and smithing. I developed a deep passion for jewelry and metalwork during my years at university, finding immense joy in the hands-on learning experience. Pursuing knowledge brought me great happiness, and the physicality of the work (welding and hammering) made me feel truly alive.

In my second year, a trip to New York City opened my eyes to a whole new world of jewelry design. Stepping into a local jewelry store, I was immediately captivated by the unique styles they curated, which differed greatly from what I had learned previously. I found immense artistic value in their designs, inspiring me to explore new avenues within the field.

Following this newfound inspiration, I decided to further my education at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where I pursued a master’s degree. The experience at RIT was not only educational but also filled with excitement and inspiration, fueling my passion for jewelry design even further.

After completing my studies, I made the move to Los Angeles, drawn by its renowned jewelry district. There, I established myself as a CAD designer, honing my skills and expertise in the industry.

While working as a CAD designer, I found myself with more time to explore my own identity, which was sparked by my master’s degree. Who I am, what I am seeking, and what is the thing I want to convey. Previously, I had often conformed to others’ expectations, even though I was brave enough to come to the United States by myself for study with my own choice, but I had never truly considered who I was as Eunmi Han. I tried to fit me as Eunmi Han, what I wanted to be. During this period of self-discovery, I made a significant realization—I had a deep affinity for the color lavender. Although this hue became trendy last year and can now be seen everywhere, it was previously only the color lavender that teens commonly used in stationery or products. I always admired the softness and ambiguity of lavender, and this discovery sparked something within me.

Additionally, I discovered a profound love for art. While my painting skills may not be exceptional, as a craftsman, I genuinely appreciate art in all its forms. This newfound passion led me to embark on a new venture—Le Conte Jewelry.

Le Conte Jewelry is a manifestation of my love for lavender and art. Gold as a medium, I want to introduce my art world to my audience.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As I mentioned earlier, facing my true self wasn’t easy because I struggled to discern between who I really am and who I aspire to be. Gauging my current identity, likes, and understanding their underlying reasons without embellishment was challenging. Admitting that my favorite color is lavender purple, regardless of others’ opinions, was not an easy realization for me. Additionally, I wasn’t naturally adept at utilizing technology, but I had to train myself to become comfortable with it. This included working with cameras and CAD software. I firmly believe that having a strong skill set is essential for effectively presenting your ideas, and achieving this is not easy. It requires breaking out of your comfort zone.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an artist, I consider myself adept at both traditional and new technologies. In my jewelry design process, I seamlessly blend traditional craftsmanship with modern computer-aided techniques.

When designing new forms of rings, I often study the anatomical structure of old rings. Each part of the ring has a specific shape for a reason, and I meticulously consider these aspects in my designs. Utilizing computer technology allows me to visualize my designs quickly and accurately, helping me to refine and iterate on my ideas with ease.

However, there are limitations to what can be achieved solely through computer visualization. Some aspects of jewelry craftsmanship, particularly those that require intricate detailing or a handmade touch, cannot be fully represented in CAD models. In such cases, I bridge the gap between digital and physical by 3D printing my designs and examining them in person. This hands-on approach allows me to add the nuanced touches and detailed intricacies that bring my jewelry to life.

In essence, my process involves leveraging the efficiency of computer technology while preserving the artistry and craftsmanship that are intrinsic to traditional jewelry making.

Alright, so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always eager to learn new things and embrace different perspectives. My experience working as a CAD designer has equipped me with the strength to comprehend others’ ideas and bring them to fruition.

I welcome collaboration and am open to supporting projects that push boundaries and challenge conventional thinking. If someone believes an idea is impossible to realize, I see it as an opportunity to make the impossible possible, especially when crafting intricate designs in gold and jewels.

Whether it’s through partnership, mentorship, or simply sharing ideas, I am committed to exploring new possibilities and pushing the boundaries of creativity in the world of jewelry design.
