Today we’d like to introduce you to Nim Ekgasit.
Nim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a massage therapist for seventeen years. As a new arrival to the United States from Thailand in 1997, I was looking for a fulfilling career in my new country.
I was trained as a music teacher in Thailand, but it was very difficult to find work in this profession. English was not my first language and all of the required certification to teach in the U.S. seemed overwhelming. My heart was not completely in teaching anyway, so I was open to the suggestion of becoming a licensed massage therapist.
I had some experience and knowledge of Thai massage, and was definitely interested in helping others. In 1999 I enrolled in the Western Institute of Neuromuscular Therapy (WIN Therapy). I completed the program in June 2000 with 1000 hours of hands-on training. It was here that I found my passion. Participating in this program gave me the greatest personal rewards and satisfaction that I had ever experienced. Upon graduation I began working in several chiropractic offices in Orange County. While I enjoyed my many years of association with these chiropractors, I recently decided to start my own practice.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Once I was enrolled at WIN Therapy, the most difficult struggle was reading textbooks with very technical medical terminology while I was still learning English! I did have some difficulties communicating with my patients for the first few years, but they were very kind and helpful. As the years went on, my English got better, and I developed more and more confidence.
The transition from working in the chiropractic offices to opening my own practice has been relatively smooth due to the invaluable experience and knowledge I picked up along the way. I truly appreciate the support that my patients have shown.
Massage Therapy by Nim – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My specialty is combining several techniques – trigger point therapy, deep tissue, sports massage, myofascial release, and Swedish massage – designed specifically for your body’s needs, in treating chronic neck, shoulder, and lower back pain. Chronic pain typically involves a bone, muscle or tendon that perpetually hurts due to the stress of repetitive motion and daily life activities or injuries caused by sports or car accidents. I think that what sets me apart is my ability to assess the cause of discomfort, to apply the proper treatment and to make my patients aware of the habits to be avoided.
It has become more apparent to me over the years that most people are unaware of the ongoing needs of their bodies. Our modern American lives are typically fast-paced and stressful. We often don’t even recognize the toll this is taking on our bodies. It’s easy to lose sight of the measures necessary to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. As a result, many of us go through our daily routines with pain, tension and stiffness related to work stress, repetitive movement, poor posture, muscle imbalance and joint disorders. We owe it to ourselves to value our bodies and to recognize their needs.
We don’t hesitate to bring our cars in for routine maintenance, but we often neglect our own bodies’ needs!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was very proud to graduate from Western Institute of Neuromuscular Therapy. Beyond that, I’m always so pleased when my treatments allow my patients to continue their daily activities without pain or medication, and the moments that stand out above the rest are when my continued treatments allow a patient to postpone more invasive treatments.
