Check Out Alpharo’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alpharo.

Alpharo

Hi Alpharo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Buenos Aires, and my family moved to El Paso, TX, when I was 4 years old. Growing up in El Paso, I started picking up instruments at 7, first the guitar, then the drums, then the piano. When I got to high school, I joined drumline, where I made many of my oldest and closest friends. Marching band in Texas is serious business, and we were around each other basically 12 hours a day for years, so the bonds came fast. Off that experience, I started producing music at 15 with a cracked FL Studio because I wanted to make dubstep; this was the year Skrillex dropped Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, so dubstep was huge at the time. At the time, it was me and a couple of friends just experimenting and trying to make stuff we thought was cool or interesting. Outside of band and school, I would just be making beats or goofing around with my friends, longboarding, going to dumb high school parties, and listening to music. We got really into artists like Flume and XXYYXX, which ended up having a big effect on my sound in terms of the textures and atmosphere I wanted to go for.

After high school, I went to college at Notre Dame, which was a very new and different experience. First year was rough, just not knowing anyone in new weather and circumstances, but I eventually found my people there. That’s where I met Ninjoi, a good friend and Lofi producer that introduced me to the world of J. Dilla, Knxwledge, Flying Lotus, and many more. That once again impacted my sound in a big way, and I had gone from pursuing heavy electronic music to a more restrained sound. I also started writing lyrics around this time and made my first song, “Take Your Time.” At this point, I decided to start uploading to streaming services, and it was early in the internet artist boom when Distrokid was the only place I knew of that would distribute to Spotify, etc. I also played drums in a band called The Shifties (now the Meeks). After my junior year, I spent a summer in LA interning and decided I would move here after graduation, so I did just that in June 2019, and I’ve been here since.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. I’ve met failure constantly. Failed relationships, failed friendships, constant rejection, complete indifference, etc. But ultimately, I think that’s just part of it. If I couldn’t handle that stuff, this wouldn’t be the path to pursue, and if I made the choice to pursue it, then I shouldn’t be surprised or dismayed when it happens. I think this pursuit tests your patience and constitution like few things do, but I have no intention of stopping because I’m not sure I could live with myself if I did.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a musician. I produce, write, sing, and play instruments. I think my specialty is bringing out the rawest form of a feeling, or at least the most concentrated form of an idea. Either that or just improvising, connecting pieces that might not make sense together, or helping someone bring out the most distinct/unique part of their artistic voice

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
It’s been central to basically every major moment in my life; I don’t think there’s a single part of my life that would be the same as it is now without both the good and bad luck that I’ve had along the way
