Rising Stars: Meet Leuras

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leuras.

Leuras

Hi Leuras, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Music has been part of my life since before I can remember. I grew up playing piano in my sunroom – my mum taught me to read music at a very young age, I think even before I could read. I’m classically trained in clarinet, saxophone, and piano, but I’ve taught myself how to play guitar and sing. In my teens, I played in a punkrock band in the suburbs, and it wasn’t until I was finished college that I seriously started writing songs. Music has always felt very natural to me. I can hear melodies in my head, but I think I surprised myself with how easy songwriting came… the words almost wrote themselves, and the melodies just came together simultaneously.

I moved to San Francisco in 2017 and got really into the local rock music scene. I started a band there with friends and began playing shows. Then, the pandemic hit. I was basically stuck in SF and couldn’t get home to see family or friends in Sydney, Australia where I’m originally from. I spent the time writing a lot of songs, almost 30, and when restrictions lifted in 2022, we got back out there and played a bunch of shows and festivals all over California. I released my EP late last year on the winter solstice. It’s titled South Van Ness, and it’s named after the street I first lived on. I’ve just recently toured and played shows in Australia and will be releasing my debut album later this year.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s hard to make a living as an artist, so there are always obstacles in that regard; it’s so easy for people nowadays to consume your music online without having to pay $30 for a CD like they used to. But this hasn’t discouraged me, it’s just made me more driven to work hard to get my music out there to as many people as possible all over the world given the access to a wider reach these streaming platforms have given us.

I love performing live, but I’ve seen venues I loved close day or not survive during hard times. I hope that’s not a sign of the future, and people keep turning up to our live shows rather than staying home to consume music on their phones.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an artist, singer-songwriter, and musician. I blend dream-rock, classic rock, alternative, and alt-country in expressive songs that describe my experiences and relationships. I play guitar, piano and I sing. The songs I share are all written by me.

I’m most proud of releasing my EP South Van Ness late last year during the winter solstice. It gave me so much pleasure to share it with my friends, family, and people all around the world. I have listeners in South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and the US. Many of the songs I wrote when I moved to a new city, San Francisco, and experienced so many new and inspiring things!

What sets me apart from others is that I write all the songs, I play rhythm guitar and piano, and sometimes I even mix my songs! I do all my graphic design and videography, too. My latest music video was shot by my dummer and I, and I edited it all. I guess you could say, I love doing a lot of the creative work myself, I get a lot of pleasure and fulfilment out of it. I hope others can enjoy my creations.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I am a very creative person, which means I like to be exposed to a lot of inspiration: sunrises, ocean swims, learning about a new idea or theory, feeding my brain, exploring the world.

My relationships with the people closest to me is very important. They are my lifeline, and without our relationships, what do we really have?

I have a strong passion for the world and travelling and learning about different ways of life. It’s incredible to think about the history of our planet and our time on Earth. I’m trying to get the most out of the time I have, and I’m also trying to express my creativity in a format I feel most like me in and capture it in time.
