Life & Work with Zoe Zheng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Zheng.

Zoe Zheng

Hi Zoe, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I live with my mother and younger sister in a single-parent household in LA. Being in a single-parent family, I am grateful for my parent’s support in pursuing my dream of becoming a designer, enabling me to embark on my journey at the ArtCenter College of Design.

Growing up, I developed a fascination with collecting nice-looking packaging boxes, which led me to choose graphic design not only as a major but also as a significant hobby. This passion extends beyond just the aesthetics; it encompasses every aspect of my work, from conceptualizing designs to the hands-on process of creating packaging prototypes. I find immense joy and fulfillment in my chosen field.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Initially, everything went smoothly, but after entering the professional world, I realized the difference between school and work. During my work, the decisions not only affected me but also related to the entire brand. Throughout this year of work, I learned things that were not covered in school, such as the process of job handovers and effective communication.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a packaging designer and murder mystery host.

Surprisingly, I find that the two are related. As a designer, I have to define the problem and solve it. As a host, I need to guide players to solve problems. I act as the super glue between participants, helping them work as a team even if they are strangers. Observation of human nature is important as I need to constantly pull players back onto the right track. Knowing the needs of consumers is also the key to communication design and leads to effective solutions. I believe good design should not be a mystery.

In my current role, I primarily focus on product packaging design and collaborate with the marketing and sales departments to provide them with the visual materials they need. I believe I’ve gained valuable insights into how a brand operates, being involved in the entire process from the initial stages to the middle and later stages of development.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe maintaining a positive mindset is very important. When faced with challenges, finding solutions would be the first thing, as I believe that there is always a way to overcome any challenges.
