Today we’d like to introduce you to Schenay Mosley.
Schenay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been based out of Chicago, IL for the past ten years and I’ve been doing music professionally since I was 19 years old. I went to Columbia College Chicago and graduated with a degree in Music Business and Entrepreneurship. I was in an all-female band named SHE/The Highness Collective and we opened up for various artists like Rashaad Patterson and Eric Roberson. We were also able to meet and connect with Talib Kweli and George Clinton. From that point, I started to sing background and play for different artists in Chicago and caught the eyes of Smino. I started singing with him in 2015, and the rest is history. I am now a solo artist who has opened up for Smino and has performed on countless tours and festivals. I’m also a music instructor starting to expand my business here in LA.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road but it also hasn’t been completely terrible either. I had to deal with being exploited because I’m a black woman and I didn’t have a manager at the time (in the very beginning of my career). I struggled finding a dope team to help me with my vision, everything is finally starting to come together. I also wasn’t super confident in myself as an artist, which translated into my art.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist and musician, vocals and piano are my primary instruments. I specialize in classical and jazz music, and I’m a natural when it comes to Rnb and funk music. I’m mostly known for my musicianship and live performances. I also do visual art, but I haven’t turned it into a business just yet. I’m most proud of my leaving my hometown to pursue my dreams at the age of 17. I’m also proud of the connections I’ve made and being able to travel the world strictly off of music; I haven’t even scratched the surface. What sets me apart is my unique approach to melodies and my wanting to create a whole new genre.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Having the freedom to move how I want and having a life full of rich experiences. I don’t like to be tied down by any means and I value having close, genuine people around me. I feel like these are the important things in life.
