
Today we’d like to introduce you to Roya Javaherchi.
Roya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in an environment where we always had dates at our home as a sweetener and snack, “Because per doctor recommendation, when my mom’s sugar level decreases, she—like every other diabetic person—needs something really sweet. Dates have low glycemic index, so they help you get back your energy and satisfy your sweet craving, but they don’t spike the sugar level in your blood.”
I am also a chocolate lover, so when I finished high school, I decided to go and learn about the chemistry of ingredients in the food industry that is why I studied food science at university, but because I was a chocolate lover, I remember I took all the lessons regarding the chocolate industry 🙂
After finishing my university and working for some years in my home country Iran, then I immigrated to the USA in 2013 and at the beginning, I was not able to start a business. I started working full time and then in 2020 I quit my corporate job and created chocolate date as DATEOLATE.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Actually, I wanted to make products enticing for the American palate, which tends to be partial to the sweetness of refined sugar. “When we researched the American palate, they really love caramel and cherry in the chocolate industry, Initially, I had concerns about how consumers would react to the combination of dates and chocolates because it was a completely new concept. It was quite challenging to introduce a new flavor profile in a competitive chocolate market.
Another challenge we faced is the highly detailed and demanding production process.
Because Dateolate is the kind of product that wants to keep the quality, the process is a little bit time-consuming, but we are working to make it completely automated,”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are in the confectionery category.
What sets us apart is that we could introduce a new confection with a natural filling that contains no added sugar, cream, or butter in the filling, unlike other confections in the market.
It’s no secret that many people avoid chocolate confections because of its high concentration of sugar. And those people who do indulge still struggle with the guilt of eating this much sugar.
We are proud because we at Dateolate could solve this problem by infusing dates into chocolates with a special formulation. The final product is sweet and tastes exactly like chocolate, but because of the creaminess of the date paste, it feels significantly more satisfying.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I really enjoy the mild climate, beautiful beaches, cultural attractions, and diverse food options in Orange County.
When I compare it to my hometown, Tehran, one thing I do miss is the vibrant nightlife there. Nevertheless, I truly love Orange County, and it has become like a second home to me.
