Today we’d like to introduce you to Tu Tran.
Hi Tu, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been a nurse for over ten years now. I started off as a pediatric nurse, and five years ago, I became a hair transplant nurse with Advanced Hair Restoration. I left the hospital world because I found that environment/healthcare to be unsupportive and toxic. Joining Advanced Hair was a leap of faith that I will forever be grateful for since 2018. After three years, I was promoted from within the company to my current role as the Nursing Director of Operations. I still participate in the surgical procedures when needed, but I have a larger focus on company growth, expansion, and success. From my personal experience of a negative working environment, I do my very best to help Advanced Hair be a place of learning, and accountability for my staff and my patients. In this company, I like to remind the staff that we are not in the service industry but the hospitality industry. We focus on creating memorable and safe experiences for our patients. In order to do this well, I have created resources and education for the staff so they feel supported, heard, and valued. Simply put, if the staff are happy, the patients will be happy. It is not easy trying to satisfy all parties involved when running a business, but it is an ideal that I personally strive for through regular iterations towards that goal.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to success is never smooth nor linear. Working in a startup and building policies/protocols along the way is difficult. Having offices in different states, that have different laws and rules, is difficult. Building a work culture that is true to its local city, but still in line with company culture, is difficult. However, what has made this journey worthwhile is the learning environment cultivated from upper management and downward. It is okay to make mistakes, as long as we learn and grow from them. We treasure honesty, accountability, and critical thinking. Management understands that perfect decisions cannot be made every time, and therefore does not punish when mistakes are made. All we expect is for our staff to take accountability and learn from the situation and move forward.
We’ve been impressed with Advanced Hair Restoration, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others
This company is in the hair restoration business. We help men and women on their hair journey through means of medication, non-invasive products, and minimally invasive procedures. Unlike our competitors, we grow and change with the times. As a brand, we challenge the current standards and ask if there are better ways to solve problems, and implement interventions to do the right thing. The point of pride stems from the work culture from the top down. We take feedback not only from our patients but from the staff in all departments. Whether you are from sales, on the surgical team, or front office; we aim for a collaborative approach in improving the experience and company brand. In addition, our business model incorporates incentive programs to show our appreciation for our staff. For instance, as the company becomes more financially successful, every employee receives a monthly bonus check reflecting so. Our mission is to push the hair restoration industry to a higher and safer standard across the board.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
When it comes to risk, I do my best to calculate it when making a decision. Everything in life has a risk, but people have always said “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”. Risk can definitely be scary because of the potential losses and negative consequences that may follow. However, it is one’s duty to do their due diligence to learn about the problem and to assess the risk more accurately. After the assessment, one should do their best to prepare for “the worst” and move forward with a choice. When deciding one or the other, courage will be needed in that moment, and whatever follows, accountability will be required the rest of the time. In my opinion, sometimes “indecision” is far worse than making the wrong decision. In a time of crisis, one needs to move forward one way or the other. Being frozen or stuck in between is unproductive and unhelpful for all parties involved. For the company, opening three offices, in two different states, within four months was very risky. A lot of things could’ve gone wrong, and a lot did, but because of the work culture and the character of our management, we endured, learned, and adapted. It was an incredible learning experience for everyone involved, and when we open our next three, we will do it better than before.
