Today we’d like to introduce you to Pei Ou.
Hi Pei, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My passion for art began in 2011 when I was a high school student. At that time, I couldn’t resist the allure of painting and creating. Every time I picked up a paintbrush, an indescribable passion welled up within me as if I were being drawn into an infinitely creative world.
Over the years, through continuous exploration and practice, I finally graduated from the School of Visual Arts in May 2023 with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts. This marked a significant milestone in my artistic journey, one that fills me with immense pride and excitement. During my time in school, I not only acquired the necessary technical skills but, more importantly, I formed deep bonds with numerous like-minded artist friends who joined me in exploring the depths and boundless possibilities of art.
This artistic journey has been one of depth and profound meaning, shaping me into the artist I am today. I eagerly anticipate the future, where I will continue to delve into the profound essence of art, creating works that carry deep significance and inspiration and persistently sharing my unique artistic odyssey with the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
On the journey of pursuing art, difficulties, and challenges are inevitable companions. Every artist experiences different hardships, and it is these challenges that shape us, providing opportunities for growth and progress. For me, these challenges have been instrumental in forging the artist I have become today.
First and foremost, art is a field that demands continuous learning and development. Mastery of techniques and the cultivation of a unique style require time and perseverance. There have been moments when I struggled in front of the canvas, striving for perfection, only to encounter setbacks. However, these challenges have spurred me to delve deeper into the world of art, continuously improving my skills.
Secondly, self-doubt and creative blockages are common occurrences. At times, I have found myself in creative ruts, questioning my own abilities and creativity. Yet, it is precisely in these moments that I have gained a deeper understanding of myself and found the determination to overcome difficulties.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a primarily oil painter with occasional forays into drawing, one of my proudest accomplishments to date has been discovering my unique artistic language during my two-year graduate program.
In the realm of oil painting, I have dedicated myself to exploring various techniques and modes of expression, constantly pushing the boundaries of my creative abilities. Each artwork represents a challenging and illuminating journey, allowing me to convey profound emotions and perspectives and create pieces that are both distinctive and highly expressive.
While oil painting remains my primary focus, I also allocate some of my time to drawing. This medium affords me the opportunity to approach thinking and expression in different ways. In drawing, I can place greater emphasis on lines, details and delve into diverse styles and themes.
However, what fills me with the utmost pride is the discovery of my own unique artistic language during my graduate program. This discovery signifies my ability to consistently and distinctly convey my thoughts and emotions through my work, producing pieces that are truly my own. This revelation not only represents a significant breakthrough in my artistic journey but also serves as a solid foundation for my future creative endeavors.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Ensuring both physical and psychological health should be the foremost priority in life.
