Exploring Life & Business with Becci Binnquist of Baby Sleep Cafe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becci Binnquist.

Becci Binnquist

Hi Becci, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been in the baby and teaching world, whether teaching Elementary School, owning my own daycare, facilitating the church nursery, or babysitting at a young age. I fell into the wonderful Doula world about 14 years ago when my friend described her new “job.” She told me that she got paid to hang out with babies all night long! I was immediately interested and started working with an organization. I soon got my Postpartum Doula Certification and started working independently. I loved being a part of such a special time in the family’s lives with their new baby/babies. I was thrilled being able to be involved in teaching parents and educating them. Although I loved helping families overnight, after 13 years, I needed to step out of that role due to lack of sleep and wanting to be home more with my husband and kids. I soon stepped into the role of educating parents about sleep. I got certified as a sleep consultant so I could help parents in a new capacity. My favorite client to work with is pregnant moms/families and newborns. I love helping get parents started on a positive sleep journey from the beginning.

I also work with babies/children who are struggling with sleep issues, whether it be getting them through the four-month sleep regression or troubleshooting early morning wake-ups, longer naps, etc.

I also teach Zoom classes and do in-home consults to new and expecting parents.

Over the past year, three colleagues and myself started a mentorship program, Elevating Postpartum. We help educate and mentor other Postpartum Doulas and Newborn Care Specialists. I have personally loved being a part of these amazing women’s lives and have learned so much as well.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many obstacles/challenges along the way. Lack of sleep and balance as a postpartum doula has always been a challenge. Dealing with clients in regard to sleep consulting has also been a challenge. Gently dealing with parents and making adjustments so parents feel positive about sleep has been an adjustment. I know what works, but if the parents don’t buy into it, then it won’t work. I always encourage the parents that unless everyone is on board, it can be challenging.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Baby Sleep Cafe was born in 2020! Owning this business has been most challenging business-wise. When I did overnights as a Postpartum Doula, clients flowed in easily. I was never without work. However, as a sleep consultant/trainer, I have had to work tirelessly via social media, networking with those in the industry and continuing to give my time to get my name out there. I’ve had to learn to input CRM’s, workflows, invoicing, etc. I’ve learned a lot, and the process hasn’t been easy, but I’m grateful for everyone that has helped me along the way.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Personally, I am not a fan of “putting myself out there.” I would rather stay home and hide behind my computer, but I know that won’t help me grow as a person or businesswoman. I make myself go to networking events and every time I go, I’m glad I did. The birth and postpartum community is so kind, loving and we share a common goal of helping families.

I have a few mentors that have helped me along the way. I think it is important that you are able to connect with different types of mentors whether they be an actual business/personal coach and a mentor that is in the same industry, who has what you want. People are more than willing to help/advise and pull you along.

Having a mentor is so important for accountability and for helping you grow in a variety of ways.
