Exploring Life & Business with Sam Birchenough of BRCHN Design House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Birchenough.

Sam Birchenough

Hi Sam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been fascinated with how things work. As a curious kid, I’d take apart everything I could get my hands on and make new things out of the parts. I never had much doubt that I wanted to spend my life doing design & engineering. After business & engineering school, some incredible design internships, and a move to Los Angeles, I founded BRCHN Design House. It’s been a heck of a tech startup rollercoaster, but clients have always been happy & the experience is invaluable. Now, eight years in, it feels like we’re really starting to hit our stride and have a meaningful impact.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As alluded to, building BRCHN Design House has been a journey of big ups & downs. Most founders, especially those who bootstrapped, have gone through the wringer at times. The early part of my story consists of months of eating pb&j, selling my car, not telling anyone about debt early on, countless deals that disappear moments before pen touches paper, etc etc. More recently, I spent almost a year recovering from a skydiving accident that very nearly took my life. I’ve taken many Zoom meetings in a hospital bed and assembled prototypes two hours after surgery. I could go on, but I think building something truly impactful, usually takes great pain, effort & intention.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about BRCHN Design House?
In 2015, I launched BRCHN Design House with the goal of propelling the product development industry years forward by redefining the concept-to-market design process.

Early on, we built relationships with technology leaders, providing us with the latest in design software & hardware. We’ve combined these toolsets with outside-the-box thinking to develop a vastly more efficient process when compared to traditional industry standards. As a boutique design firm, we run four projects at a time; usually no less or more. The result is 70+ world-class designs delivered to happy clients in consumer products, consumer packaged goods, medical, dental, transportation, furniture, and entertainment.

When clients come to us for product design & development, they get access to a wide range of capabilities and technical expertise, but they also get outside-the-box thinking that leads to truly novel solutions.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
