Meet Claudia Fung

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia Fung.

Claudia Fung

Hi Claudia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Hong Kong. Since a young age, I have wanted to be a game development artist. After getting into ArtCenter for illustration, I started discovering my enthusiasm for typography, so I switched major to the graphic design department. I specially enjoy the process of creative direction, visual identity, and creating a meaningful experience for users. I am still in a journey of exploring possibilities inside and out of the design world and can’t wait to see what’s next.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth journey for me as a designer, but without all the help I have gotten along the way, I wouldn’t have been where I am today. The first struggle I had was figuring out that illustration is not something I want to pursue for my career; starting all over with graphic design was a tough decision, but also rewarding now that I looked back. The second is catching up my peers with keen eyes on details and a range of skills from 2D to 3D. I think taking the time to practice and study really improved my fundamental skills, and also finding out my interest helped me to keep track of my process and setting career goals. In conclusion, I think being comfortable with change was key to my career and education as a designer.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a visual designer, mostly focusing on brand identity, motion design and UI/UX, I think my strength lays in finding the balance between complex information and artistic expression most suited for the subject I work with. My range of skill sets from illustration to graphic design and vision from the East to the West, provides a unique angle of perspective. My ability to be adaptive and being a risk-taker has also been crucial to my work experience in Munchkin and SFMOMA.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Everyone has been there before and you would hope one day you can do the same for someone else as a mentor. Also, be more proactive in career events. I am currently enrolling in the ArtCenter’s mentorship program, and I have always encouraged people around me to apply for the same program. As an introvert, it has been difficult for me in terms of networking, but it does go better after each practice.
