Meet Pasadena Hairstylist: Jessica Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Wilson.

Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Early on in high school, I knew I wanted to become a hairstylist. I was anxious to get started, however, the Regional Occupational Programs (ROP) had been canceled in my school district. My family was in the process of moving so they chose a city where ROP programs were available. I started the cosmetology ROP program in the spring semester of my junior year in high school. This meant I would attend normal high school from 7:30 am – 2:00 pm and the cosmetology program from 4:00pm – 9pm Monday – Friday. My goal was to be licensed before I turned eighteen. I passed State Boards 2 days before my 18th birthday.

After receiving my license, I was offered a one-year Assistant Program at a reputable salon in Pasadena, California. It was there, that after I completed the program that I started as a stylist and began to build my clientele.

While continuing to see clients in Pasadena, I then started another training program under a well-known Color Specialist in West Hollywood California. That’s when I realized I really enjoyed the “color” aspect of my profession.

I am now an independent stylist working out of a salon in Pasadena California. I continue to attend additional trainings to help me keep up on the latest trends. I hope to open my own salon in the near future where I can continue to build my business and help others do the same.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think my road has been typical for this profession. I think the biggest struggle I have encountered is diverse personalities in this industry.

What is the most difficult part of what you do?
Building my client base has been a challenge because I am rather young and “look” young for my profession. However, as more and more people see my work I am finding that my work speaks for itself.

How do you define success?
When I can see the confidence change in my client after I finish, is a good indicator that I’ve succeeded in that particular job. Regarding business success, I gauge that, on the number of my client base and return clients. My personal success is still a work in progress and I am in the process of creating those markers now.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I would love to have a salon of my own one day. Until then I am continuing to learn and keep up with all the latest trends so I can ensure that I am ahead of the curve and offering my clients the best that’s out there.
