Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Lian. Jessie was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Patrick Boylan.
Hi Jessie, we’re so thrilled to have you sharing your story with us today. Maybe we can kick things off by having you introduce yourself to our readers? We’d love to have you go into your story and how you got to where you are today.
When I was a kid, I would tape strips of green tablecloth up on my wall and imagine my bedroom a wilderness, a field of tall safari grass. It was my way of trying to add beauty and magic to my everyday spaces. I did this in the virtual realm too– I remember learning HTML and CSS with the singular purpose of glamming up my Neopets storefront with fancy fonts and colors. So it wasn’t a surprise when I transitioned into the User Experience (UX) Design industry about a year into my dreadful first job working in Microsoft Excel (you’d be surprised though at how good-looking you can make a spreadsheet). As a UX Designer, I get to design digital experiences (mobile apps, web apps, etc.) through a human-centric lens. It’s the dreamy union of aesthetics, function, psychology, and data-driven decision-making, and I’ve gotten to see how important it is in helping us make our digital neighborhoods more beautiful, functional, and necessary.
Please tell us more about your brand, www.jessielian.com
As a freelance UX Designer, I get to take my clients’ brilliant ideas for new digital products, and translate them into designs that would feel the most intuitive, usable, and delightful to their users. I’ve gotten to work on an AI-driven music education app that personalizes music learning to skill level, an HR platform that connects recruiters to the right candidates for a job, a healthcare platform that connects primary doctors to specialists, and so much more. But while the front-end design is the most visible part of my work, I also spend a lot of time in the research phase, making sure I fully understand how a product might fit into a person’s life, and how it might make that person’s life just a little bit easier. Thoroughly understanding a product in context is what I believe makes a design most successful, so I try to always prioritize the purpose and the heart behind my work.

So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Patrick Boylan and www.MuseFlow.ai and we really admire them and what they’ve built. For folks who might not be as familiar, can you tell them a bit about your experience with www.MuseFlow.ai.
Getting to work with Patrick and the rest of the MuseFlow team was a dream for me, not only because of their joy and passion, but also because of how much I believe in the necessity of a product like MuseFlow. It’s a music education app that’s changing the very way we learn music, turning it from a repetitive process of learning the same song over and over again until it’s perfect, to a more holistic process of learning the foundational skills of music, specifically by facilitating a “flow state” for the user, where they can play through endless amounts of sheet music that is constantly changing and adjusting to their skill level. I loved talking through the specifics of how a user knows whether or not they’re progressing, how a user could stay motivated while enjoying the process, how a user could continuously feel in control of their experience (like by adjusting the tempo or turning on “practice mode”). But the hard part was that we had *so* many ideas that we can’t immediately implement! The team wants to get an early prototype out so that they can start getting feedback as soon as possible, so there’s a lot we had to put on the back burner- but I’m excited for the product to grow, and for the process of learning music to shift into something that is radically accessible and expansive.
