Today we’d like to introduce you to Porchea Carroll.
Hi Porchea, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started acting later in life but right on time. I’ve always loved the art of storytelling, and I think as a military brat you spend a lot of time re-telling your origin story, so you find ways to tell the same story in a new way. Moving and living all around the world exposed me to a lot of different cultures, languages and ideas and I love to draw on and bring those experiences to the characters and stories I’m a part of. I had an extremely successful athletic career, which has also helped me to stay disciplined but also remains in a state of play. Because at the end of the day “We’re Makin Movies!” and how fun is that?! We get to tell stories that defy time and space, go on a journey to find our soulmate and save all of mankind all in one day. It’s our humanity that brings us together and I love being able to share those stories on screen, so for me it was not only a natural transition but only a matter of time before I landed in Hollywood.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not, lol. In track, we have something called a false start, it where the race starts and then is immediately stopped, and then you go back to your mark, get set and start again. I can count on one hand how many false starts I’ve had in competition but in this business…Whew! It’s not as straightforward as the competition, but it has made me stronger as a person, no doubt. I’ve definitely had to start over A LOT. I lost a lot of stability, I’ve been without a home, and I lost many friends and even some family along the way. I never stopped believing or betting on myself, and all of those losses allowed me to meet some really wonderful new people and be a part of projects that were so much bigger than me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When I’m not filming, you can find me flying from the ceiling. I’ve found a new love and passion in aerial acrobatics, and oddly enough, that’s what I’m currently most proud of, lol. The level of strength and skill it takes to fly so flawlessly always amazes me. If you’re looking for me on tv, I’m in a couple of films and shows on the streaming platforms Hulu, Prime, BET+, I have a few commercials currently airing, and I have a comedy feature that’s currently in post and will be headed to the festival circuit this fall. I also host live events for automotive brands. My ability to translate my athletic gifts and competitive focus into the creative world of acting and storytelling is what I believe sets me apart from others.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During Covid, I learned how to slow down and to really hear myself. Listen more to my intuition and I gained clarity on who I wanted to show up in the world as. It also re-taught me how to be truly present with people. I learned how to creatively connect with nature and was reminded of the interdependence of all life, and how we are all intuitively drawn together.
