Daily Inspiration: Meet Yinan Wei

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yinan Wei.

Hi Yinan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello, I’m Yinan Wei, a graduate of ArtCenter and an associate concept artist at Respawn Entertainment. At ArtCenter, I explored various areas of art and design, refining my skills and developing a passion for character and hard-surface design. Prior to that, I studied animation at Tokyo Polytechnic University, where I learned about the unique style and techniques of Japanese animation.

Currently, I’m part of the talented concept team working on the game Apex Legends. As an artist, I’m dedicated to creating immersive worlds and bringing characters to life through my designs.

I’m excited to be here to share more about my art journey. Thanks for this opportunity!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’d say it has been a pretty smooth road. Growing up with a father who is a graphic and advertisement designer, I was exposed to the world of art and design at a young age. His guidance and mentorship helped me learn the technical aspects of art and design early on.

In elementary school, I quickly gained recognition for my artistic abilities and became known as “the most artistic guy” in my class. I designed posters for every class and school event, which further fueled my passion for art. Throughout my academic career, from elementary school to university, I continued to excel in art and design, often being recognized as the most talented person in my class.

I’m grateful for the early start and support from my father, which helped me develop my passion for art and design. It’s been an exciting journey so far, and I’m looking forward to continuing to push the boundaries of my creativity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a concept artist in the gaming industry, I specialize in character and hard-surface design and when I’m not working on professional projects, I would spend my spare time creating personal art. I think my unique artistic style is characterized by its harmonious colors and painterly techniques, which sets me apart from other artists in the industry. And I take great pride in my ability to think creatively and approach design challenges in innovative ways. This skill, combined with my distinct painting style, has allowed me to create memorable and visually stunning characters.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’ve always been a chill and curious person, always up for trying new things. I love checking out objects and finding out what makes them tick. Even something as simple as a road sign can be fascinating if you think about the design and the story behind it.

I’m into design, and my love for observing things has really helped me build my visual library. I’m always asking questions, like why a brand uses a particular font or why fire hydrants have to be red. It’s all about the little details. My passion for observation and attention to detail really shines through in my work. I think great design isn’t just about looking good, it’s about telling a story and creating a connection with people.
