Today we’d like to introduce you to Lulu Benavides.
Hi Lulu, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story starts in Peru, where I was born and raised. I always knew I wanted to be involved in the arts. I just wasn’t sure which route I would take. I started with ballet and then moved on to playing instruments such as the flute, violin, and piano. Lastly, I found acting and completely fell in love with it. I quickly enrolled in acting classes to get more training because I decided I wanted to move out of my country to pursue acting. After months of preparation, I auditioned for AMDA (The American Musical and Dramatic Academy) and I got in. Six months later, I was getting ready to move to Los Angeles and start my journey here.
Since moving to Los Angeles, I’ve been lucky enough to meet a lot of people in the industry, which has made it possible for me to be a part of various acting projects, last year I got the opportunity to write, produce and act in a short film which was a very challenging but also a big learning opportunity for me and I hope I get to do more of that in the future.
Recently I was cast to be a part of a short film that has a very special place in my heart because it discusses topics of mental health, and I’ve always been an advocate for and to be able to interpret these roles that carry so much importance is a dream come true.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Moving out of your comfort zone when you are eighteen was a big challenge in itself. For starters, the language was a big barrier. I had to work on my accent to make sure people were able to understand me. The cultural shock was immense and there were many things I had to get used to.
Soon enough I also realized the career I had chosen was very hard but that made me want to push harder to achieve my goals. I didn’t give up and I started to get to know more people in the industry, I got an agent, and I started getting roles and also creating my projects.
The entertainment industry as many of you may know is very competitive but I believe is all about perspective and how you overcome challenges. You will face a lot of rejection but then you just have to keep pushing until you get where you want to be.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Actress and Content creator. The arts and Acting were something that has been a part of my life since I was little. I was able to get a degree in it and after that, I got signed by an agency and currently auditioning for many projects. I worked on a few short films that had very interesting themes such as Immigration and mental health.
As for Content Creation, I discovered that I had a passion for it later in life. When I moved to Los Angeles before the pandemic, I started sharing a lot of interests in Instagram and TikTok and people enjoyed it. Later I had some collaborations with Reebok, Toms, Merit, Revive, etc and I also had the honor to attend Beautycon. While it’s been a little bit tricky to find a balance to not overshare my life, it is something that I really enjoy.
I think for both acting and content creation what sets me apart is my perseverance. These are things I’m very passionate about and I want to do for the rest of my life so no matter what obstacles are put in my way or how many rejections I face, I am always there and I keep going because it’s when you keep going after the rejections that something major comes up.
