Check Out Wally Kelly’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wally Kelly.

Hi Wally, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always loved all things colorful and creative. It was never hard to express myself because I felt like I always had the means to through clothes and art and interests and stuff ever since I was a kid. I definitely felt judged for a long time growing up because of how eccentric I could be, but I guess when I got older, I found the beauty in just not caring. I’ve learned that making art for other’s consumption is draining, so doing it for myself unapologetically has definitely lead me the farthest in my career.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think my biggest obstacle was/is definitely myself. I feel like I held myself back from so many opportunities I had in the past because I felt like I wasn’t good enough, but growing is accepting that you’re what you make yourself! I struggle with comparisons a lot but I just try my best to keep evolving and accepting everything I put out.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an eclectic style sculpture and 2D artist with an eccentric style. I try to always incorporate new mediums and learn different skills to apply to new projects. I think my biggest influences are absolutely people like Yayoi Kusama and Johnny Cash. People who put out their love and talent on the line without question inspire me the most! I feel like I can relate to them at a much smaller level. I’m really proud of my giant hand sculpture named Elvis, I carved him out if an 8’ block of EPS foam for people to interact with and feel held. 🙂

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m nothing without the people in my life that I care about, but I feel like I come across as being either grumpy or intimidating, haha. I don’t usually collaborate as much as I’d like to because I really value working solo, but behind the scenes, my friends are the people who help me through art blocks/show anxiety/everything in between. I’d be super lost without them and am very, very thankful.
