Life & Work with CJ Duron

Today we’d like to introduce you to CJ Duron.

Hi CJ, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In a Darkened Room started in the winter of 2020 in San Antonio, TX before the ensuing pandemic took hold in the Spring of 2020. Myself Cj Duron(Vox/Guitar) and Bass Player Svia Svenlava began playing with music influenced by what we grew up with which was based on early Goth and Darkwave in our basement till we had a smokey, sensual sound that we could expound upon. We added our synth player Kandi Hardee after a few months of working on material. We continued to cultivate our live shows to create an immersive trance-like experience that slowly ramps up like a heartbeat. At the moment, we are networking with other bands regionally who share our vision and look forward to playing more festivals and doing a few European tours.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The main struggle has been establishing a name with In a Darkened Room. You have to put in the work and let people know what you’re doing and promote yourself heavily which a lot of people are not comfortable with. Coming from other bands in the past, it is almost second nature. We wanted to put a heavy emphasis on the quality of the music and not just make filler songs. A lot of these were written during a very heavy time in our history. We began telling stories of loss, love and redemption. We also wanted to portray these sentiments by way of video so we began filming giving a different perspective and story to the music.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I, CJ Duron am a singer/songwriter and visual artist from the city of San Antonio, TX. I play several instruments in multi genres and network with other talented musicians from the surrounding area. I run sound for local productions in the city and help set up concerts of different sizes. My artwork consists of layered glass carvings that I create, custom light, and frames. I am most proud of trying to create a community-based environment and for both artists and musicians that we can build upon.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The Covid-19 Crisis taught us that time is not something everyone has, and we should try and make the most of it. Some friends have come and gone and whether we like it or not we have had to adjust to some changes. But I do believe in the resilience of our human nature and feel like it taught us how to connect with who we truly are and where we stand in the world. Maybe helped realize what we are here for and what we can contribute to a bigger picture.
