Life & Work with Flo McHenry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Flo McHenry.

Hi Flo, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an overall creative entrepreneur, American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter & a talent manager for a few creative talents in Los Angeles. I also do a plethora of things related to business consulting, as well. I love to help people make their passions into a source of income. I enjoy empowering and helping people become entrepreneurs by doing exactly what they love to do!

Everything started with my interest for poetry that goes back to when I was in the third grade. I hadn’t realized that it could become a source of income until 2017, when I decided to self-publish my poetry book called, ‘Her Name is Flo’. From there, I started to learn that I could make a business out of doing the things I enjoy! That in turn inspired my journey into supporting other talented creators to achieve their entrepreneurial goals as well as my own.

My first Voyage Interview, I started as just a self-publish author under my artistry/business as Floetyc (trademarked/registered). However since the start of the new year (2023), I have been able to expand not only as an artist but as a business owner. I was able to launch Floetyc Communications & Services LLC, which will be the home for Flo The Terp, interpreting services, and Managed By Flo, business services including talent management, separate from Floetyc, the author. I am happy to say it is going well and I have been able to manage three talents: Keyla Garcia, Bleu London, & Art By Kush.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Like all businesses, yes I have experienced some challenges in my journey especially when COVID-19 came around. COVID really pushed me to rethink how I wanted to approach my business. That chapter in my journey taught me that I can adapt to whatever comes my way! Another challenge that I have faced is the time limitation. I work a nine to five as an ASL interpreter and then continue on to work my business from five to nine. Ideally, I would like to dedicate the majority of my time to my business and creating content. That is a challenge that I am currently faced with because it requires a lot of investment to keep a business running.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As mentioned before, I am an overall creative entrepreneur, including being a content creator/micro-influencer.

I am most proud of my patience with my poetry and with building/expanding my businesses. It is important to take time on building something great from the soul to share to the world. I believe my push to be creative and accessible in everything I do is what sets me apart from others.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice is Research! Do a lot of research! Another thing, don’t let yourself or other people tell you you cannot do it! I got to where I am because I read books and used the internet as a resource to gain information on various topics that have benefitted me in getting to where I am today. Do your research, experiment, and ask questions to people who are in the spaces where you want to be. Three things that I wish I knew when I was starting out would be; using Google is definitely okay, making mistakes is bound to happen but that’s okay too, and it’s also okay to take your time.
