Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Weber.
Hi Grace, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI and I grew up in a really musical family. My mom is one of 10 kids and her dad, my grandpa, had each of his kids learn an instrument growing up so all of my 9 aunts and uncles, and my mom, played different instruments. When I was growing up, we used to sing and play music around the piano at my grandparent’s house with all my aunts and uncles and cousins, it was amazing. So music has always felt synonymous with family for me. I joined the Central City Youth Gospel Choir in Milwaukee when I was 12, and that was a huge part of how I started discovering who I was an artist, my love for soul and r&b and gospel, and what I loved so much about singing with other vocalists and the call and response type interaction and connection with audiences. When I was 16 I sang on Showtime at the Apollo and that kinda began to lead me down my path toward becoming a professional artist. From there I studied music in college, and then I met the Social Experiment and Chance the rapper in 2016, and that’s what led me to winning my first Grammy from working on Coloring Book. I’m now working on my second album and I’m really excited about it because it really reflects who I am as an artist and an r&b singer.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been up and down for sure. After I won a Grammy with Coloring Book, I ended up signing with Capitol Records in 2018. It was a really cool experience in a lot of ways, but it also definitely exposed me to a whole other side of the industry that I don’t think I was ready for. I experienced some of the sorts of tough parts of being on a major label and losing the independence of being able to release music when I wanted and some of the creation process. I ended up getting dropped at the end of 2019 and it was tough in some ways to process, but I felt very grateful to be independent again and get back on my path of really discovering who I was as an artist and the music I really wanted to do. I had to sort of crawl out of a hole after the whole experience, but it taught me what it feels like to not give up and believe in yourself no matter what.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an R&B singer and songwriter. I’m known most for my vocals and just my love of singing. I think I’m most proud of the original music I’ve created and the live shows I put together. I really love being on tour and singing live, connecting with audiences in those spaces, and I think my band and I really put on an amazing show. I think the way I interact with audiences often turning the audience into a choir and singing with them maybe sets me apart. Plus this new album I have coming out will definitely be setting me apart <3!
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m always down to collaborate with dope people!! Music, fashion, art, all of it. I’m always grateful for anyone out there streaming my music and coming out to the shows!! That support is everything.
