Meet Valley Makeup Artist: Jacob Adam Aguirre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Adam Aguirre.

Jacob Adam, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had always had an interest in makeup and beauty. I would do my grandmother, mom and sisters makeup when I was young. In the late 90s, I became obsessed with the Kevyn Aucoin making faces and loved the transformative power of makeup. I later became a self-taught special effects makeup artist and would create fun looks for myself and friends on Halloween. It wasn’t until years later after a career in Manhattan real estate and conference production that I decided to pursue my true passion and go back to MUD for makeup artistry and another school for cosmetology. I was lucky enough to assist on a feature film shortly after finishing school. I’ve always had a strong drive to follow my dreams, I think through that I’ve been able to book some really great projects over the years. Some notable work has been several seasons of NY fashion week, part of Kayne’s Yeezus tour and several magazine covers. I’ve been able to travel to work all over the US, Canada and even photoshoots in London last year. I really enjoy the work I do and meeting so many different types of people.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think the first year was rough, many low paid or unpaid jobs, but through those, I met some great people that I still work today. I also learned to respect my craft as an art and a career and value my work.

Who, or what, deserves a lot of credit for where you are today?
There have been a few people that have played a role and inspiration in my career. I have been inspired early on by the passion and creativity of Kevyn Aucoin, I learned a lot from his books early on. I am always inspired by my friend and mentor Valerie Pasaret Garcia, I admire her giving spirit, professionalism, creativity and love for her craft.

What kind of work do you look forward to most?
I always look forward to working fashion week. I love the energy and creativity. It’s always exciting to be backstage then see your work on the runway. I also love the work I do with Paul Mitchell, it’s an awesome brand and the team is like no other, they’re all so positive and a joy to be around. Also, the brand does so much to give back to the community that it feels good to be a part of their team.

What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I think the only thing I would have done differently is start sooner. I think for a long time I thought being a makeup artist was something you do for fun and couldn’t really have a successful career doing it.
