Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Davis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My husband, David and I (Stephen) started Davis Health Care Staffing nearly 4 years ago just as a speech therapy staffing company. I was the only speech therapist we had.
Through hard work and determination, we have become one of the most sought-after home health care staffing companies throughout LA / California. We are now proud to offer not only Speech-Language Pathologists, but also Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists. We pride ourselves on taking as much of the daily stress off of our therapists in order to allow them to be as “stress-free” as possible when they arrive to their patient’s home. This allows for improved patient care, patient outcomes, and a reduction in risk of re-hospitalization. Davis Health Care Staffing offers unique options to assist with flexibility in staffing and scheduling.
An interesting point about our story also is that I went to graduate school to become a Speech-Language Pathologist and my husband and business partner has a business background in the Towing and Wrecking Industry. David’s mother suffered from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) from 1995 until she passed in 2000. He was in high school for the majority of this time. His family had no resources such as PT, OT, or ST and Dave stepped up and physically assisted his mother for anything she needed. He now owns a company that provides all services that his mother would have greatly benefitted from.
We both have an emotional passion to provide the best care possible because every patient deserves and is entitled to these services that he did not have access to when caring for his mother.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth but at least there is a road. We are very blessed to have had the opportunities that we have been afforded. Working together as spouses, one of which has a background of 13 years as a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist and the other as an entrepreneur that understands the ins and outs of starting and running a successful business. This also sets apart from our competition. We are able to bounce ideas off of each other which allows us to think not only from a business standpoint, but also as a treating therapist standpoint (which I am as I carry a fulltime caseload of approximately 30-40 home visits per week). We are both from the mid-west and are always looking to take any opportunity to better ourselves and our company because that allows us to improve the quality of the lives of as many patients as possible.
Davis Health Care Staffing – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Davis Health Care Staffing is a home health care staffing agency. We offer physical, occupational, and speech therapists to numerous home health agencies throughout CA.
I am not only an owner, but also a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist. I am known throughout the residential and medical community for my unique practice style. I think outside of the box when it comes to treatment plans for my patients because we need to look at all patients as individuals and we also need to look at the patient as a whole being, not just a medical diagnosis. I also have a medical device that I utilize with the majority of my patients that improves breath support, reduces risk of aspiration, and improves over function. The majority of the home health agencies that I have contracts with pay for this device for the patient so there is not an out of pocket cost to the patient or their family. I started a second company called HelpYouBreathe.com in order to assist patients with gaining access to this medical device much faster than going through a 3rd party vendor.
As a company, we are proud to be not only business partners, but also husbands. This is something that was not embraced back in the Mid-West but it is accepted and embraced here in Los Angeles. I get to work every day with my best friend and we get to know in our hearts that we are making a difference in people’s lives every day.
The thing that sets David and myself apart from others is our work ethic and compassion. We have follow through and we treat every patient as if they were family in order to provide the best treatment with the hope of obtaining the best outcome from their therapeutic experience. We live by the idea of, “treat someone as you would like to be treated”.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The moment that I am most proud of in my career is when I have been requested by name and company from physicians within UCLA and Cedars as well as from patient referrals. This to me is the highest compliment because it says that I treated someone well enough that they spoke highly of me to their doctors, family members, and friends.
Patient specifically, I am very proud of when I am asked to treat a patient that has not had a successful experience with speech therapy in the past but after a few sessions I am able to get them to safely eat solid foods or drink liquids for the first time in several years. That is VERY exciting for me as eating is such a social experience and such an important time for people to spend together.
