Conversations with Jessica Golriz Hyam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Golriz Hyam.

Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Of course. I grew up in a traditional Persian Jewish household and as I got older, I was interested in learning more about my heritage. I slowly became more observant in my faith throughout the years. When a Jewish woman gets married, she typically will cover her hair either with a wig or head covering.

Even though most women who cover their hair after marriage do so with a wig, I didn’t feel that it would feel like the right part of my journey and I decided to cover with head coverings instead. You’d think with having so many observant people in different communities that we would have options to shop in-store for head coverings, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. About three years after we got married, I decided to open The Little Tichel Lady with the encouragement and support of my husband and family.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not 🤣 For one thing, I never operated a small business in my life. I had no clue what to do. How to file a DBA, how to keep track of expenses, what to order and how much. Where to put everything! We started this business out of our 2 bedroom apartment and every time a client wanted to come to see our pieces in person, I would set up our merchandise on the dining room table. But, on the flip side I did work in a retail store for 5.5 years (I always wondered why I was there for so long). Working in retail, I learned how people work and how to speak with clients, how to give excellent service, how to merchandise a store, etc….

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the founder and co-owner of The Little Tichel Lady, we specialize in offering head coverings of all styles and colors for people all over the world. I am the face of my brand, seriously, when people see me they talk business and that’s about it. I love making video tutorials so everyone can learn how to wrap from a-to-z. I’m known for offering beautiful/unique pieces at unbeatable prices, most of which you won’t be able to find anywhere else, partly because we custom make a lot of what we offer. I’m proud that I’m able to make people happy when it comes to this part of their journey. Whether it be because they cover their hair for religious reasons, health reasons, fashion, to reduce anxiety, etc… I am here to make the process as smooth and as easy as possible. What sets me apart is that I first and foremost want my clients to be happy. If they’re not happy, I’m not happy. I will never encourage someone to purchase something I feel they intuitively don’t like or if I don’t feel like it would work with their skin coloring, style, etc…. And I try my best to give the best customer service, that’s definitely one of the most important parts of our business.

How do you think about happiness?
This is such a loaded question. But the short answer: seeing that I can make a difference in someone’s life makes me happy. Whether being at home with my family or in the store/online with my clients. Why? Because I don’t think that we’re put on this earth to live our lives without interacting with one another. I feel like we all have a gift and that we should use that gift to better help those around us.
