Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle MaliZaki.
Hi Michelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Japan. I came to America to go to school and ended up staying after the graduating from SDSU. Long story short, I had the midlife crisis and took an improv class from park and rec in my area which lead me to Second City Hollywood Conservatory program, then about a couple of tears after graduating from the program, I was at an open mic at Cork’s Lounge in Van Nuys where I saw someone doing standup. I didn’t really know about standup comedy until that moment. And I’ve been doing standup for 5 years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Other people’s road always looks smoother. I had some lucky moments and not so lucky moments. Hardest obstacle for me was to accept myself as is, not comparing myself with other people. I’m just keep on trying to move forward one step at a time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a middle age Japanese immigrant mom standup comedian. I do standup that’s not too edgy. You can take your bosses, first dates and grandma and will enjoy the show. NO AWKWARD MOMENT!
I was a runner-up at US Comedy Contest 2020. Finalist at Clean Comedy Challenge 2020 and 2019.
I also have a handful of songs that I sing sometimes on stage.
How do you think about happiness?
Making people laugh makes me really happy. Sometimes, I do shows where kids are in the audience and when they are laughing with their parents or grandparents, I get the most joy…
Sometimes, I run jokes with my kids and when I make them burst out even though they don’t want to laugh, that’s the best feeling I get.
